Chapter 5 - the champagne facade

The night of the gala descended upon Manhattan with breathtaking, suffocating extravagance. The Beaumont estate was transformed into a glittering palace of gold and light, a flawless projection of immense, untouchable wealth. Monumental crystal chandeliers cast a brilliant, warm champagne lighting over the grand ballroom. The walls, gilded with intricate gold leaf, reflected the glow, creating an atmosphere of dreamlike luxury. Towering arrangements of flawless white roses served as fragrant sentinels around the room, while hundreds of guests from the highest echelons of politics and finance mingled in their diamond-studded couture and bespoke tuxedos. The tables were set with antique fine china, heavy silver cutlery, and elegant gold banquet chairs, awaiting a dinner that was less a meal and more a performance of power.

Vanessa descended the grand staircase like a conquering queen. She wore a spectacular ivory off-shoulder couture gown, the fabric heavily encrusted with sparkling diamond embroidery that caught every flash of the society photographers' cameras. Her golden-blonde hair was swept up into a luxurious, immaculate updo, and delicate pearl earrings rested against her neck. She moved with an entitled, cruel, and arrogantly confident grace, greeting billionaires and senators as if she were already the undisputed matriarch of the empire. She had carefully orchestrated the seating chart, ensuring her loyalists were positioned near the head of the banquet table, while intentionally assigning Emma a seat reserved for distant, irrelevant relatives.

But when Emma finally entered the ballroom, the meticulously planned social hierarchy fractured. Emma stepped through the towering double doors, wearing the garment Adrian had brought from Europe. It was an elegant emerald-green one-shoulder silk gown, completely devoid of the ostentatious, heavy crystal embroidery Vanessa favored. The silk draped flawlessly over her graceful figure, emphasizing her delicate features and fair rosy skin. She wore understated diamond earrings, her glossy chocolate-brown hair falling softly around her shoulders. She did not look like an exiled sister; she looked breathtakingly beautiful, projecting a gentle, vulnerable, yet quietly dignified sovereignty that instantly commanded the quiet awe of the room. The contrast between Vanessa’s desperate, blinding flashiness and Emma’s effortless, royal elegance was staggering. Vanessa’s jaw tightened as she watched influential guests instinctively part to let Emma through, her sapphire-blue eyes darkening with a vicious, uncontrollable hatred. The stage was set, the audience was captivated, and the fuse on the explosive truth was burning down to the final millimeter.
