Chapter 2 - the orchestrator in the dark

The preparations for the annual Beaumont Foundation Gala transformed the quiet, mourning estate into a chaotic theater of superficial luxury. Hundreds of white roses were delivered daily, filling the grand hallways with an overwhelming, suffocating fragrance that reminded Emma far too much of the funeral chapel. While the army of florists, caterers, and lighting technicians swarmed the main floors, a deeper, darker game was being played in the shadows. Adrian Beaumont, the thirty-six-year-old eldest brother, had been conspicuously absent since the reading of the preliminary will. Adrian was an extraordinarily handsome man with a tall, muscular physique, a sharp jawline, and steel-blue eyes that missed absolutely nothing. To the outside world, he was mourning in seclusion at the family’s European chalet. In reality, he was tearing through the continent, utilizing a network of highly paid private intelligence contractors to track the sudden, inexplicable diversion of Beaumont corporate funds that had occurred just hours before their father’s death.
Inside the New York estate, Vanessa tightened her grip. She summoned the head of domestic staff, a loyal woman who had served the family for three decades, and unceremoniously fired her, replacing her with a sycophantic manager who answered only to Vanessa. Emma watched this brutal restructuring from the periphery, her heart aching for the loyal employees cast aside. She attempted to intervene, approaching the estate attorneys to halt the administrative changes, only to be met with polite, condescending smiles and the horrifying revelation that her administrative access codes to the family trust had been completely revoked. She was essentially a guest in her own home, surviving on a heavily monitored allowance. One evening, a dismissed maid covertly approached Emma in the gardens, slipping a small, encrypted flash drive into her hand. The maid whispered that she had copied the files from Vanessa’s private server before her access was terminated. Emma spent the night in her locked bedroom, decoding the drive. The files contained a series of email exchanges between Vanessa and a disgraced, disbarred attorney who specialized in forging offshore trusts. The documents proved that Vanessa was not just positioning herself for a corporate takeover; she was actively preparing to liquidate the primary holding companies and transfer the liquid assets into accounts entirely beyond the jurisdiction of the United States. The twist, however, was hidden in the metadata of the final email. The transfer required a mandatory thirty-day waiting period after the patriarch’s death. That thirty-day window expired at midnight on the night of the gala.
