Chapter 4 - the gathering storm

The storm broke forty-eight hours before the gala, heralded by the unannounced, aggressive arrival of Adrian Beaumont. He bypassed the private security gates entirely, his armored black SUV tearing up the immaculate gravel driveway. Adrian strode into the grand foyer, his swept-back dark hair slightly windblown, his muscular frame radiating a fierce, protective, and thoroughly dangerous energy. Vanessa, who was in the midst of barking orders at a terrified lighting technician, froze. Her confident smile faltered for a microscopic fraction of a second before she smoothly recovered, drifting toward him with open arms to welcome the prodigal brother. Adrian did not embrace her. He sidestepped his younger sister completely, his steel-blue eyes sweeping the foyer until they landed on Emma, who was standing quietly near the sweeping staircase. The relief that washed over his sharp jawline was palpable.

Adrian escorted Emma immediately to his private, soundproofed study, locking the heavy mahogany doors behind them. He looked exhausted, having crossed the Atlantic without sleeping, but the fire in his eyes was absolute. Emma handed him the small iron key Evelyn had provided, detailing the cryptic conversation in the conservatory. Adrian stared at the key, a slow, dangerous smile touching his lips. He walked to a massive, antique globe in the corner of the room, using the key to unlock a hidden compartment in the wooden base. He withdrew a thick, sealed dossier bearing the crest of a highly exclusive Swiss medical clinic. Emma watched as he opened it, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. Adrian revealed that he hadn't just been tracking the stolen money; he had been tracking a shadow operation Vanessa had orchestrated months before their father died. The documents contained undeniable, biological proof of a secret that would shatter the family hierarchy permanently. Before he could explain the contents, a sharp, authoritative knock echoed on the study door. Adrian quickly concealed the dossier. He turned to Emma, his voice dropping to a low, commanding whisper. He handed her a large, heavy garment box he had brought from Europe. He instructed her to wear the contents to the gala, promising her that no matter what happened in the ballroom, she must not break her composure, because the war was about to end in a public execution. When they opened the door, Vanessa was standing in the hallway, her sapphire-blue eyes narrowing with deep, venomous suspicion as she stared at the closed garment box in Emma's hands.
