Chapter 8 - Raymond Mercer

Raymond descended slowly.

Silver hair.

Black coat.

Cane.

Seventy-one.

Alive.

Julian looked like he might be sick.

“You let me bury you.”

Raymond smiled.

“You buried ashes.”

“Whose?”

“Does it matter?”

“Yes!”

Raymond’s expression sharpened.

“No. That is why you were never ready.”

There it was.

The ideology behind everything.

People were pieces.

Grief was leverage.

Children were assets.

Truth was optional if control remained intact.

Nicholas stepped forward.

Raymond raised the cane slightly.

Nicholas stopped.

Conditioned reflex.

Even after eighteen years.

Raymond noticed.

Smiled.

“You still remember.”

Nicholas’s face twisted.

Emma moved between them.

“Don’t.”

Raymond looked at her with strange affection.

“My granddaughter.”

Emma recoiled.

Victoria shouted:

“You kept her from me!”

Raymond looked almost bored.

“You lost her.”

“You took her.”

“I protected her.”

I actually laughed.

Everyone looked at me.

“I’ve heard that word enough tonight.”

Raymond studied me.

“You must be Margaret.”

“Yes.”

“The interfering grandmother.”

“The one holding the child your family tried to bury.”

His eyes moved to Chloe.

For the first time, concern crossed his face.

“She was not supposed to wake yet.”

Julian lunged.

Nicholas caught him.

Not to protect Raymond.

To prevent Julian from destroying whatever answers remained.

Raymond explained the “funeral.”

It was a test.

Victoria devised the physical staging, but Raymond encouraged it.

He wanted Nicholas to believe Chloe was dead.

He knew Nicholas had been watching the family.

If Nicholas cared about Emma, Chloe, or Julian, grief would force him into the open.

It worked.

“You used a six-year-old child.”

“Yes.”

No apology.

That answer chilled even Nicholas.

Raymond looked toward the hidden children.

They were not randomly abducted.

They were descendants connected to old clients.

Children whose legal identities could expose decades of fraudulent custody settlements.

Living evidence.

Raymond kept them hidden because if authorities found them, his entire empire collapsed.

Victoria insisted she was protecting them from being moved elsewhere.

Partly true.

Partly self-preservation.

Then Julian asked:

“What happens now?”

Raymond smiled.

“Now I decide which of my sons deserves Mercer Holdings.”

Nicholas laughed.

“You think we still want it?”

Raymond looked at Emma.

“You will.”

Then at Chloe.

“Both of you will.”

Why?

Because Mercer Holdings didn’t merely contain money.

It contained every hidden record.

Whoever controlled the company controlled the identities of dozens of families.

Blackmail worth more than the assets themselves.

Then Chloe whispered:

“Grandma…”

I looked down.

“What?”

She pointed at Raymond.

“He’s not Grandpa.”

Raymond’s smile disappeared.

Everyone stared at her.

Chloe continued:

“Grandpa has a scar.”

Julian froze.

Their father had a burn scar beneath his left ear.

The man before us had none.

Nicholas stepped closer.

“Who are you?”

The stranger tightened his grip on the cane.

May you like

Then Emma whispered:

“That’s Dr. Vale.”
