Chapter 1 - The Scratching Inside the Casket

The first sound was so faint I thought grief had finally broken something inside my head.
Scritch.
Scritch.
I stood alone beneath the soft chandelier light of Julian’s funeral parlor, one hand resting on the polished white edge of my six-year-old granddaughter’s casket.
“Goodbye, sweetheart,” I whispered.
Then it came again.
Scritch. Scritch.
From inside.
My breath stopped.
I lifted the lid farther.
Chloe’s eyelids moved.
I screamed and stumbled backward hard enough to strike a flower stand.
Then her eyes opened.
Not fully.
Barely.
But she looked at me.
“Grandma?”
I lunged forward.
Her skin was hot. Her breathing shallow. A white mourning dress covered her tiny body, but padded straps hidden beneath the lining kept her arms and legs from moving freely.
This was not an embalming error.
This was not a funeral-home mistake.
Someone had secured my living granddaughter inside her own coffin.
I found the small metal key beneath the lining, released her, and lifted her against my chest.
She immediately wrapped both arms around my neck.
“I was good,” she whispered. “I stayed asleep.”
My stomach turned.
“Who told you to do that?”
Her lips trembled.
“Daddy said if I woke up, I would ruin everything.”
Footsteps thundered upstairs.
Julian appeared at the end of the room.
He saw Chloe alive.
For half a second, I expected him to collapse with relief.
Instead, rage crossed his face.
He grabbed the brass railing beside the casket and rushed forward.
I stepped between them and slapped him so hard his head snapped sideways.
“Have you lost your mind?”
He stared at Chloe.
Not like a father seeing his child alive.
Like a man seeing a secret escape.
Then Victoria entered.
My daughter-in-law wore a black dress and no expression at all.
Chloe saw her.
And screamed.
A raw, terrified scream.
She buried her face against my chest.
Victoria’s eyes hardened.
“She heard too much.”
Julian turned toward his wife.
“What are you talking about?”
Before she could answer—
KNOCK.
KNOCK.
KNOCK.
Everyone froze.
The sound came from beneath the floorboards.
Then another.
Then several at once.
Tiny fists.
Small voices.
Children.
“Help us!”
Julian’s face went white.
He looked at Victoria.
“Who is down there?”
Victoria stared at the floor.
Then she began laughing.

And in that moment, I understood that Chloe being alive was not the darkest secret in the building.
It was the first door.
