Chapter 14 - The Locked Building

Panic spread instantly.

Not because of fire.

There was no melodramatic explosion.

Stephen had triggered the building’s old security lockdown.

Steel shutters.

Locked exterior doors.

Disabled internal phones.

The children below were trapped.

But Chloe was upstairs.

Emma too.

Julian grabbed Stephen.

“Open it.”

Stephen smiled.

“No.”

Nicholas stepped closer.

“Then you stay inside with us.”

The smile weakened.

Good.

Stephen expected fear.

Not shared consequences.

Eleanor moved to the office panel.

She knew the building.

Raymond had designed the lockdown after a burglary decades earlier.

There was a mechanical override.

Where?

Preparation room.

Below.

Behind the children's corridor.

We needed to reach it.

Stephen refused to give the access code.

Emma suddenly spoke.

“I know it.”

Everyone turned.

Stephen went pale.

She had watched him.

Children noticed what adults thought they didn’t.

Four digits.

The day Raymond first brought Emma into the hidden facility.

Not sentiment.

Ownership.

Emma entered it.

Door released.

Nicholas and Julian went downstairs together.

No rivalry.

No discussion.

They freed the children first.

I stayed with Chloe and Emma.

Victoria helped Eleanor.

Stephen watched his world collapse through simple cooperation.

Then one of the hidden boys approached me.

“Mrs. Margaret?”

“Yes?”

“There’s another room.”

My heart sank.

“What room?”

“The one we aren’t allowed to talk about.”

Of course.

We opened it after the building was secured.

Inside were no more children.

Only videotapes.

Hundreds.

Statements.

Confessions.

Private evaluations.

And one recent video.

Stephen speaking with someone.

A woman.

Face unseen.

Voice clear.

“You keep Julian focused on Chloe.”

Stephen answered:

“And Nicholas?”

“Emma will handle him.”

“And Victoria?”

“She’ll do anything if she thinks Emma is alive.”

Stephen asked:

“What about Margaret?”

The woman laughed.

“She believes she’s the only sane person in the family. That makes her predictable.”

I froze.

Someone had anticipated me too.

Stephen looked at the monitor.

His face changed.

Eleanor whispered:

“Who is she?”

Stephen said nothing.

Then the woman stepped partially into frame.

Silver hair.

Black mourning clothes.

Everyone slowly turned toward me.

I stared at the screen.

Same height.

Same build.

Same dress.

My face wasn’t visible.

Julian whispered:

“Mom?”

“No.”

But Stephen started laughing.

“You really don’t know.”

I turned on him.

“Know what?”

He looked at Eleanor.

Then me.

“Tell her.”

Eleanor went pale.

I suddenly understood.

Another family identity.

Another hidden child.

Another lie.

“What am I supposed to know?”

Eleanor whispered:

“Margaret…”

May you like

Her voice broke.

“You had a twin.”
