Chapter 11 - Eleanor Mercer

Eleanor sat in the preparation office behind the main funeral room.
Eighty-eight.
White hair.
Straight posture.
No visible weakness beyond age.
Julian stared at her as though looking at a ghost.
“Grandma?”
She opened her arms.
He didn’t move.
Good.
This family had earned suspicion.
Nicholas entered behind him.
Eleanor cried when she saw him.
Nicholas did not.
“You knew.”
“Yes.”
“You knew Dad sent me away.”
“Yes.”
“You did nothing.”
“I tried.”
Nicholas laughed.
There it was again.
Tried.
Protected.
Couldn’t.
The vocabulary of people who survived someone else’s suffering.
Eleanor accepted the accusation.
“I failed you.”
No excuse.
That mattered slightly.
She explained.
Raymond inherited the hidden custody operation from his own father.
Eleanor discovered pieces of it gradually.
When she confronted Raymond, he threatened to expose financial crimes committed by her late husband.
She stayed silent.
Years.
Then Nicholas disappeared.
That broke something.
Eleanor began copying records.
Stephen discovered it.
Raymond arranged a fake death for her eventually—not to kill her, but to remove her publicly and isolate her.
She escaped.
Stayed hidden.
Then returned after Raymond’s actual death.
Her goal:
Destroy Mercer Holdings’ secret archive.
Why not simply expose everything?
Because releasing raw records could expose vulnerable adults and children whose identities had been altered.
She needed controlled legal restoration.
Victim by victim.
Not a public dump.
Stephen wanted the archive for blackmail.
Victoria wanted Emma.
Nicholas wanted the truth.
Julian wanted his family back.
Everyone wanted something.
I wanted Chloe safe.
Eleanor looked at me.
“That may make you the only person here thinking clearly.”
Then she asked me for Chloe.
I tightened my arms.
“No.”
Eleanor almost smiled.
“Good.”
A test.
I hated that too.
“No more tests.”
Her expression changed.
“You’re right.”
Then Stephen began laughing.
Everyone turned.
“You’re all congratulating yourselves.”
Eleanor’s face hardened.
“What?”
“You think this is about the archive.”
“It is.”
“No.”
He looked at Chloe.
“It’s about the Mercer heir.”
Julian said:
“Emma?”
Stephen smiled.
“No.”
“Nicholas?”
“No.”
Then:
“Chloe.”
Victoria went white.
Julian stared.
“Why Chloe?”
Stephen looked directly at Victoria.
“Tell them who her biological father is.”
May you like
The room stopped.
Julian slowly turned toward his wife.
