Chapter 13 - Emma’s Bloodline

Emma did not want the test opened.

That surprised everyone.

“I don’t care.”

Nicholas looked at her.

“Emma—”

“You’re nice to me.”

His face broke.

That was enough for her.

Biology could wait.

But Stephen wanted leverage.

He opened the file anyway.

Nicholas lunged.

Eleanor stopped him.

“Let him.”

The report said Emma was not Nicholas’s biological daughter.

Victoria stared.

“No.”

She knew who Emma’s father was.

Nick Vale.

Nicholas.

Except Nick Vale had apparently been another identity used by Stephen’s operation.

Nicholas had met Victoria briefly, yes.

But their relationship timing didn’t match Emma’s conception once hospital records were examined.

Victoria had been manipulated into associating Nicholas with a period he was actually institutionalized elsewhere.

Who, then?

Stephen smiled.

Raymond.

Again.

No.

Victoria shook her head violently.

“I never—”

Not physical conception.

Fertility interference again.

Victoria had undergone treatment for a reproductive condition at nineteen.

The clinic had been connected to Raymond.

Her pregnancy resulted from unauthorized donor material.

Raymond’s.

Emma and Chloe were both Raymond’s biological daughters.

Born years apart.

Victoria their mother.

Julian legally father to Chloe.

Nicholas falsely convinced Emma was his daughter.

Stephen had built overlapping claims intentionally.

Why?

Because confusion made everyone dependent on the records.

Control the records, control the family.

Emma whispered:

“So Nicholas isn’t my dad?”

Nicholas knelt in front of her.

“No.”

She looked devastated.

Then he said:

“But I came back for you.”

She stared.

“And if you want me in your life, I’m not going anywhere.”

She began crying.

Victoria covered her face.

Julian watched.

No jealousy.

No competition.

The first fragments of a family forming outside blood.

That terrified Stephen.

“You’re missing the point.”

I answered:

“No. You are.”

He had spent decades believing biological relationships and legal documents determined loyalty.

Yet the children were already choosing differently.

Then Eleanor opened Raymond’s final estate amendment.

It contained one clause none of us expected.

All privately held Mercer assets were to be liquidated upon confirmation that Stephen Vale interfered with succession.

No heir.

No controlling child.

No prize.

Raymond had built a dead-man switch.

If Stephen manipulated Emma or Chloe, the fortune disappeared into independent trusts for victims of the custody network.

Stephen went completely still.

“You’re bluffing.”

Eleanor handed him the document.

His hands shook.

Thirty years of manipulation.

Gone.

Not inherited.

Not controlled.

Distributed.

Then Stephen smiled.

“You think Raymond was the only one who prepared contingencies?”

He looked toward the floor.

A low mechanical hum began.

The hidden basement doors locked simultaneously.

Victoria whispered:

“What did you do?”

May you like

Stephen answered:

“I made sure the children could never testify.”
