Chapter 6 - Nine Nights Upstairs

The complaint had gone nowhere.

A January guest named Caleb Morris had messaged through rental platform:

We heard what sounded like a child crying in attic around midnight. Host said pipes. Very disturbing.

Dennis replied:

Old house. Heating ducts make strange noises.

Another guest in February:

Small footsteps upstairs despite listing saying attic inaccessible.

Response:

Squirrels.

March:

Someone left a child’s crayon near attic ladder.

Dennis refunded $50 cleaning fee.

No one called police because each detail alone looked strange, not certain.

But together?

Nine bookings overlapped dates Sophie later described being hidden.

Sometimes four hours.

Sometimes overnight.

She learned rules:

No loud crying.

No bathroom unless Dennis came.

Use bottle? This could get degrading. Better he escorted sometimes at night if safe.

Crackers.

Rabbit.

No toys that make noise.

The wardrobe had vent holes drilled in back.

That chilled me.

Dennis had modified it intentionally.

Not just impulsive attic placement.

When?

Tool marks estimated recent months.

Receipts from hardware store:

December 28.

Latch.

Drill bit.

small battery fan.

There was no fan on June 3.

Sophie said:

“Daddy took fan because it was noisy.”

Trisha knew?

Messages:

T:

Did you drill holes?

D:

Yes.

T:

I hate this.

D:

Then tell your parents.

T:

No.

There.

Trisha hated situation but chose concealment over child safety.

Then rental income.

Why?

Dennis had lost job nine months earlier.

He never told me.

He claimed consulting.

Short-term rentals funded Hawaii? Partially.

Trisha worked marketing, but they overspent.

Again image.

Photos resorts came from discounted influencer collaborations? Some.

Hawaii trip itself:

anniversary plus announcement of Trisha pregnancy to her parents.

Sophie could not exist in that narrative.

So attic.

Then Dennis’s psychology? Do not pathologize.

He told investigators:

“I didn’t see another option.”

There were many.

Call Rebecca.

Call me.

Childcare.

Cancel trip.

Tell in-laws.

He meant:

no option that preserved image.

Then one supervised session with Sophie? Therapist recommended not yet. Dennis demanded.

Court denied immediate due child fear.

He wrote letter.

Child attorney reviewed.

It began:

Daddy is sorry you didn’t understand—

Rejected.

Too minimizing.

Attorney told his counsel accountability letter must not manipulate child.

Later Dennis wrote:

I put you in attic. You did not cause that. I should have kept you safe. I did not.

Better.

Sophie did not want read yet.

We kept.

Then Rebecca’s custody petition.

Evidence showed she had tried repeatedly to retrieve Sophie.

Why didn’t she call my number again?

She believed Dennis had told me and I sided with him, because Dennis forwarded fake message supposedly from me:

Rebecca, stop contacting family. Sophie is not our responsibility.

I never wrote.

Forensic review showed message came from Dennis-created email resembling mine.

He had impersonated me.

That hit.

So Rebecca saw me as hostile.

I saw her as unstable ex.

Dennis stood between.

Classic triangulation.

Then she said:

“I hated you.”

“I understand.”

“No, I hated you enough that when Sophie asked about grandfather, I still told her your name.”

“Why?”

“Because if something happened to me, you were still only person who owned house Dennis couldn’t sell.”

Interesting.

She did not trust my character.

She trusted structural fact:

property ownership.

Then:

“I thought eventually taxes or repairs would bring you there.”

Instead cleaning did.

Rosa.

Then police complaint from rental guest.

Why not platform investigate child?

No clear proof.

Company suspended Dennis account after law enforcement report.

Rental earnings frozen pending claims? Not automatic. Platform cooperated, records.

Then I began formal civil claim for unauthorized commercial use of property and damages.

Not because revenge.

House insurance had not covered short-term rental, creating liability.

Dennis endangered my asset and guests.

Attorney separated from criminal/custody.

Then Trisha requested plea negotiations? Too early.

Her parents arrived from California.

They had believed Trisha pregnant with first family grandchild.

They were horrified by Sophie.

Not because existence but concealment.

Her mother, Diane, asked me:

“Did Trisha know?”

“Yes.”

Diane cried.

“She told us Dennis had no children.”

Then:

“Can we help Sophie?”

I said:

“Ask Rebecca and child advocate.”

Good.

They did.

No unilateral gifts.

Then Diane met Rebecca eventually, apologized for daughter's role.

She did not ask forgiveness.

Then Trisha pregnancy.

Stress, legal proceedings, no graphic issues. Pregnancy continued normally.

Important not imply punishment through pregnancy.

Then Dennis and Trisha separated.

Not instantly divorced.

Trisha moved to parents temporarily under court conditions.

Dennis rented apartment.

He blamed her initially.

Texts:

You wanted Sophie hidden.

Trisha:

You built wardrobe.

Both.

Mutual accusation.

Then one major discovery in unauthorized rental finances.

Dennis had charged cleaning fee to guests.

Who cleaned?

Usually a rotating service.

Why call me to hire Rosa this time?

Because his regular cleaner canceled.

He didn't want to pay replacement.

He used me.

That tiny sting.

If regular cleaner had come, would she find Sophie?

Possibly.

Dennis knew cleaners usually didn't enter attic because “private storage.”

Why did Rosa?

She heard crying.

Then Dennis chose Rosa indirectly through me without knowing Rosa was thorough and brave.

Chance.

Not master plan.

Then Rosa confessed something:

“This wasn’t first time I heard about child.”

“What?”

Three months earlier another cleaner, her cousin Maribel, told her a strange story from a house in same neighborhood: she heard tapping above ceiling but homeowner told her attic off limits.

Was it our house?

Yes.

Maribel worked one booking.

She did not report because assumed pipes.

Another missed chance.

System depended on ambiguity.

Then Sophie began sleeping without crackers under pillow after six weeks.

We celebrated quietly.

Not praise that pressured.

Just stopped replenishing stash.

One morning she left half banana on plate.

Rebecca cried.

Food no longer had to be saved.

Then permanency hearing approached.

Rebecca had stable housing, therapy, employment resumed remotely, medical cleared.

Child welfare recommended reunification with Rebecca, gradual transition.

I was happy.

Also terrified.

I had gotten used to Sophie in my apartment.

Her toothbrush.

Rabbit on couch.

I had only known her two months.

Already loved.

Then Sophie said:

“Grandpa, if I live Mommy, can I still sleep here?”

“Yes.”

“How many?”

“As many visits as your mom and court agree.”

“Can Mommy come?”

“Yes.”

No ownership.

Then Dennis’s attorney announced he would contest permanent custody.

He argued Rebecca had abandoned child for six months.

Evidence said opposite.

But courts evaluate.

Then he produced a recorded voicemail from Rebecca:

Sometimes I wish I had never had Sophie.

Painful.

Context?

Postpartum depression? We must not equate mental health with unfitness. Recording from years earlier during crisis.

Dennis planned use.

Rebecca cried hearing.

“I said it.”

“When?”

“Sophie was six months old. I hadn’t slept. Dennis had left. I called friend.”

She had been overwhelmed.

One sentence not abandonment.

Her history included postpartum depression treated successfully.

No evidence current incapacity.

Court-appointed evaluator stressed that treatment history alone does not make parent unsafe.

Good.

Then source of recording:

Dennis had secretly kept private voicemail forwarded by friend? Maybe Rebecca left him voicemail during argument. Fine.

He had curated vulnerabilities.

Yet judge cared recent conduct.

Then Rebecca’s lawyer produced something else.

A notarized document Dennis signed four years earlier.

Acknowledgment of Paternity and Support.

He had previously legally admitted Sophie was his.

May you like

So his years of “DNA says not mine” were knowingly false.

Cliffhanger: Attached to that acknowledgment was a handwritten note from Dennis explaining exactly why he wanted his own daughter erased from the family—and my name appeared in the final paragraph.
