Chapter 5 - The Staircase Photograph
The photograph came from an unlikely source.
A smart doorbell camera across the street.
Not inside staircase.
But front window reflection captured part? Too convenient.
Better from indoor nanny camera Dennis forgot? He owned no nanny because hidden. Could be one of Elmer’s old security cameras in upstairs hallway, installed years ago and thought disabled. Let's use house security system.
I had installed three interior cameras after burglary twelve years earlier:
garage entry.
rear mudroom.
upstairs landing.
Dennis unplugged visible monitor but not recorder?
Cloud system remained under my account.
I had forgotten interior cameras still active because app only exterior displayed.
Forensics recovered historical clips within subscription? Six months retention maybe yes premium annual.
May 14 clip showed Trisha at top of stairs arguing with Dennis.
Sophie stood several feet away holding rabbit.
Trisha stepped backward on loose runner and fell three steps.
Sophie did not touch.
Dennis immediately picked Trisha up.
Then looked at Sophie.
Pointed.
Audio:
“This is because of you.”
Not:
you pushed.
But blame.
Later custody filing transformed into push.
That damaged credibility.
Then court.
Judge did not decide permanent custody based on one hearing.
Emergency orders:
Sophie remained in kinship placement with me pending transition evaluation.
Rebecca granted supervised then expanding contact, because she had lawful maternal rights but had been separated six months and child needed careful reunification.
Dennis limited to supervised contact only if child therapist approved.
Trisha no direct contact initially due allegations and attic circumstances.
No instant parental-right termination.
Then criminal investigation.
Leaving five-year-old confined for days with insufficient water in hot attic was serious.
Dennis eventually charged with child endangerment/unlawful imprisonment? Jurisdiction Oregon; we don't need exact statute. Prosecutors considered evidence.
Trisha’s liability depended on knowledge.
She claimed Dennis acted alone.
But messages contradicted.

Trisha:
She cannot be here when my parents visit.
Dennis:

Not bedroom. She sneaks out.
Dennis:

Dennis:

Good. By then we’re already in Maui.
That implied plan cleaner find? Maybe.

If your dad finds her?
Dennis:
He won’t go attic.
Trisha:
Rosa might.
Dennis:
Then problem solves itself.
Chilling.
They intended discovery perhaps after prolonged confinement.
Why?
They wanted abandon Sophie without directly arranging safe care, perhaps forcing me to take her.
But if so, why not tell me?
Because they didn't want relationship exposed while traveling/in-laws.
And perhaps wanted plausible deniability:
“She wandered/hid.”
Then attic setup.
Thin mattress suggests used before.
Sophie told therapist she had been placed attic multiple times “when people came.”
Usually hours.

Dennis normalized.
Then Trisha’s pregnancy.

Trisha felt betrayed.
Instead of leaving Dennis or acknowledging Sophie, she treated child as evidence of humiliation.
That explained coldness.
Then Trisha’s attorney offered statement:
She did not physically harm Sophie.
She did participate in concealment.
She left knowing child remained house.
She believed cleaner would discover Tuesday.
She admitted this was reckless and wrong.
Important differentiation.
Dennis had direct primary responsibility.
Then Rebecca.
She arrived Portland.
First in-person reunion at child advocacy center.
Sophie saw through glass? No, regular therapeutic room.
She ran only after twenty seconds.
Then into mother's arms.
Rebecca sobbed.
I stepped out.
Later she hugged me unexpectedly.
“Thank you.”
“I didn't do enough.”
“You found her.”
“Rosa found.”
We both looked at Rosa, who had come.
True hero? Rosa simply listened.
Then Sophie asked:
“Can Mommy sleep Grandpa house?”
My apartment had one bedroom plus den.
We arranged no overnight initially due reunification plan.
Eventually Rebecca rented apartment nearby with legal aid/housing support and some settlement? Not yet.
I offered money.
She refused first.
“I don’t want Dennis saying you bought me.”
Fair.
So I offered through court-approved child support structure? Better Dennis ordered temporary support, and nonprofit assistance.
I paid only Sophie-related expenses transparently with receipts when allowed.
No control.
Then house.
Dennis and Trisha still lived in my property legally under informal tenancy.
I wanted them out.
But couldn't just change locks while investigation.
Attorney advised formal notice consistent with Oregon landlord rules.
I served termination notice based on owner occupancy/misconduct? Need current law unstable. Since legal high-stakes? But creative fiction no need precise. We can say counsel followed applicable tenancy process, no self-help eviction.
They returned under police escort later to collect essentials? After no-contact order restricting house because crime scene. Eventually.
I decided sell property.
Not yet.
First preserve evidence.
Then while inventorying attic with police clearance, Rosa found something behind wardrobe.
A small pencil drawing.
Three stick figures:
Sophie.
Mommy.
Grandpa?
One labeled? No readable? Story can.
She drew man with gray hair beside house.
Had never met me.

Sophie explained:
“Mommy said if I ever got lost, find Grandpa Elmer.”
Rebecca had taught her my name.
Even after I blocked her.
Then Sophie said:
“Daddy said Grandpa didn’t want me.”

Dennis isolated by controlling narrative.
Then I remembered eighteen months of being kept outside house.
That began shortly after Sophie arrived in December? Wait eighteen months, Sophie only six months. So earlier Dennis had already distancing. Could be financial/property scheme maybe.
Why barely allowed me entry for 18 months?
Another secret.
My deed folder remained locked desk inside house.
Dennis knew I owned.

But police found mail addressed to a company:

Owned by Dennis.
He had been listing portions of my property as short-term rental while telling me house needed privacy.

He paid me no rent.
Not violent-related but financial exploitation.
Also applied for homeowner-related rebate using forged authorization? Could add but avoid too many crimes.
He may have used property to secure business loan? If not owner impossible. Could forge.
Let's keep short-term rental.
That explained strangers, Sophie hidden during guests perhaps.
Dennis was renting my house to travelers while living free and hiding daughter.
When guests booked entire house, where did Sophie go?
Attic.
The wardrobe was not spontaneous.
