Chapter 3 - Rebecca’s Letter

Rebecca’s car had been sitting in a long-term storage yard for nearly five months.
Not abandoned roadside.
Towed from an apartment complex after expired registration.
Police found it because Detective Reed searched vehicle records connected to Rebecca.
Glove box contained sealed envelope.
ELMER STANLEY.
My name.
Why had she written to me?
I read only after investigators photographed and cleared it.
Mr. Stanley,
If Dennis tells you Sophie is not his, ask to see the laboratory report yourself.
Do not accept screenshot.
My hands tightened.
She continued.
Dennis knows I kept original.
If anything happens to me, Sophie needs someone who will ask questions instead of protecting him.
That sentence cut.
Because I had protected Dennis before.
Not from crimes.
But consequences.
College debt.
Rent.
Jobs.
Excuses.
Then:
I am not asking you to take my side.
I am asking you to verify.
Rebecca described pregnancy.
Dennis initially happy.
Then panicked.
He was trying to build relationship with Trisha before Sophie born?
Timeline: Dennis and Rebecca separated shortly after birth maybe, Trisha appeared later. Let's clarify.
Rebecca said Dennis changed after Sophie was born.
He complained baby interfered career.
They separated when Sophie was eleven months.
Dennis paid support informally for a year.
Then demanded DNA test.
Rebecca agreed.
A private lab performed.
According to Rebecca, result showed 99.99% probability Dennis was father.
But Dennis later claimed lab reversed result due contamination.
Rebecca never received such reversal.
Instead he stopped payments and threatened custody litigation.
Why did Rebecca not pursue formal support?
Fear and instability.
She worked hourly jobs, moved often.
She wrote:
Dennis told me his family had money and lawyers and that if I pushed, he would prove I was unfit.
Family had money?
I owned house and had pension.
Hardly dynasty.
But to Rebecca maybe enough.
Then most painful:
I tried contacting you twice.
I froze.
Dates.
Four years ago.
Three years ago.
I remembered.
Unknown woman left voicemail:
“Mr. Stanley, I need to talk about Dennis.”
I told Dennis.
He said:
“Crazy ex. Please block.”
I blocked.
The second letter came to old house.
Dennis intercepted? I never saw.
Rebecca continued:
If you are reading this, I probably failed to keep Sophie away from him.
He has begun asking about her again because Trisha cannot have children and because Trisha’s family thinks Dennis has no child.
That was strange.
Why would Trisha want Sophie if she hated her existence?
Maybe she didn’t want her.
Then:
Dennis wants me to sign papers.
He says if I sign, Sophie will have a better life but must never call him Dad around Trisha.
I refused.
Rebecca had been in custody dispute?
No court record yet.
Informal pressure.
Then final:
If something happens, look inside rabbit.
Sophie’s stuffed rabbit.
I looked across hospital room.
Sophie slept with rabbit under chin.
Detective Reed said:
“We should preserve that.”
With child-welfare approval, they carefully examined rabbit in my presence.
A seam along back had been hand-stitched.
Inside:
a USB drive.
Not explosive mystery.
Files.
Rebecca had scanned:
DNA report.
texts with Dennis.
bank transfers.
voice memos.
photographs.
and one document titled TEMPORARY CARE AUTHORIZATION.
Signed by Rebecca.
It granted Dennis temporary care of Sophie for fourteen days.
Date:
December 19.
Six months earlier.
Why fourteen days became six months?
Then texts.
Rebecca:
I’m sick. Just keep her until I’m out of hospital.
Dennis:
Fine.
Rebecca:
Promise Trisha won’t punish her.
Dennis:
Stop being dramatic.
Hospital?
Detective checked.
Rebecca was hospitalized December 18 after severe pneumonia.
Released December 27.
So she did not die.
Sophie believed “went to sleep and couldn’t wake.”
Why?
Dennis lied.
Where was Rebecca after discharge?
Records showed she attempted to contact Dennis repeatedly.
Texts:
Bring Sophie back.
No response.
Then:
Dennis, I’m calling police.
He answered:
You signed custody.
She:
FOURTEEN DAYS.
Then Dennis:
You’re unstable and Sophie is better here.
Then communication stopped January 4.
Did Rebecca disappear voluntarily?
Maybe.
Last known financial activity:
bus ticket to Portland January 5.
Then no bank usage.
No phone.
That was concerning.
Police opened missing-person investigation.
But no assumption foul play.
Then DNA report.
Original lab confirmed through records:
Dennis was Sophie’s biological father.
No reversal.
His statement on phone was false.
Why hide paternity from Trisha?
But Trisha’s voice said “He found her?” She knew some child existed.
Then additional texts between Dennis and Rebecca:
Rebecca:
Does Trisha know Sophie is yours?
Dennis:
She knows enough.
Rebecca:
What does that mean?
Dennis:
It means she thinks Sophie will be gone soon.
That sentence made me cold.
Gone how?
Could mean returned.
Could mean elsewhere.
Need evidence.
Then a photograph metadata dated January:
Sophie sleeping on couch in my house.
She had been there months.
While I was denied entry.
Dennis and Trisha had hidden my granddaughter inside property I owned.
Where did they keep her before attic?
Sophie later told child therapist:
“Bedroom downstairs until visitors.”
“Sometimes closet when Grandma Trisha came?”
Trisha was wife, not grandma. Maybe "Miss Trisha's mom". Let's not.
She called Trisha “Miss T.”
Sophie said Miss T didn't like toys downstairs.
No school.
No daycare.
Five-year-old isolated for months.
Why?
Because Trisha’s parents visited often and believed couple childless.
Image.
Then one video from rabbit USB.
Rebecca recording herself in January from motel room.
She looked exhausted.
“Dennis has Sophie. He won’t return her. Police told me temporary-care dispute may need family court because he’s father and paperwork exists. I’m getting lawyer.”
Important.
Maybe police didn't dismiss but referred.
Then:
“If something happens to me, it’s not because I ran.”
Could be paranoia.
Then last clip dated January 6.
Rebecca stood outside a building.
“I’m meeting Dennis.”
Where?
Metadata geolocation disabled.
Background sign partially visible.
Investigators enhanced? We should not magical. Visual identification by officer recognized industrial complex? Later.
Then video stopped.
No subsequent files.
That was last known image of Rebecca.

And in frame behind her, parked across street, was Trisha’s white SUV.
Cliffhanger: When detectives finally asked Trisha where she had been on January 6, she gave an answer that Dennis immediately contradicted.
