Chapter 10 - The Second Baby
Trisha gave birth to a healthy baby boy.
No punishment through pregnancy.
She named him Noah.
Dennis was still in custody and had limited legal involvement.
Trisha’s parents supported.
Child welfare evaluated due her conviction and history.
A prior child-endangerment offense did not automatically mean she lost baby.
Assessments, supervision plan, therapy, home checks.
She was allowed to parent with monitoring and family support because evidence did not show she posed current direct danger to newborn under plan.
Some people in family criticized.
I did not.
Systems should assess, not revenge.
Rebecca struggled emotionally.
“She helped lock Sophie away and gets to keep baby.”
Pain understandable.
But Noah was not instrument.

“Can I access?”
As parent for authorized distributions via trustee, not own.

Then Carol memorial.
Sophie asked visit grave.
At cemetery, she placed drawing.
“Hi Grandma Carol.”
I cried.

“Did she know Daddy was bad?”
I said:
“She knew your dad could make mistakes. She didn't know what would happen later.”

“Was Daddy bad when little?”

She thought.
“That sounds hard.”
“Yes.”

One afternoon, Rebecca received call from Oregon Department of Human Services? About sealed adoption inquiry? Could introduce new twist: Sophie had a younger sibling? We already have Noah.
Maybe hidden secret in birth certificate: father's name Dennis, but second witness? Need twist.

What could birth certificate reveal? Sophie’s legal name maybe Sophie Rebecca Stanley-Lane and middle name Carol? Or father Dennis. We already used.
