Chapter 12 - Sophie Carol Lane Stanley

Her full legal name was:

Sophie Carol Lane Stanley.

Carol.

My late wife’s name.

I stared at Rebecca.

“You named her after Carol?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“You once told Dennis your wife was kind.”

When had she heard?

Dennis talked about Carol early in relationship.

Rebecca never met her, but knew Carol had worked as elementary school librarian and was the one person Dennis said could calm his father.

That was me.

Then Rebecca said:

“I hoped if he ever denied Sophie, name would remind him she belonged to more than his shame.”

It didn't.

But now it mattered emotionally.

Birth certificate also listed Dennis as father from day one.

No ambiguity.

Sophie ran finger over name.

“Grandma Carol.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Did Daddy know?”

“Yes.”

“Did he like?”

“He did then.”

Time.

Then another protector from beginning:

Rebecca’s sister Hannah had opened small savings account for Sophie at birth.

$25 monthly.

Not much.

But consistent.

Hannah lived Idaho, had been estranged from Rebecca after family conflict but kept account.

When Rebecca disappeared into shelter, she didn't immediately contact due shame.

They reconciled after.

Hannah became aunt in Sophie’s life.

Support network widened.

Important:

not only Elmer savior.

Then Sophie asked why no photos in Dennis/Trisha house.

Rebecca:

“They hid part of family.”

Sophie:

“Can I put my photo Grandpa house?”

“Absolutely.”

She chose one at zoo.

Then one day Dennis saw.

He stared.

“That was good day.”

Sophie:

“I remember ice cream.”

He smiled.

Memory before harm allowed.

Then relationship with Trisha/Noah.

Sophie liked brother.

Trisha remained supervised longer.

Eventually no direct supervision for sibling visits? After multi-year stability and professional recommendation, Rebecca agreed public setting visits.

No automatic parental rights to Sophie because Trisha stepparent? She had no legal right, so all contact voluntary.

Good.

Then Dennis’s parental contact increased to unsupervised daytime at age nine after court review, no safety incidents, therapist support.

Rebecca struggled.

But evidence-based.

First outing:

library and lunch.

No closed houses.

Sophie returned happy but exhausted.

“Daddy bought me book.”

“Good.”

“Can I keep?”

“Yes.”

No gift suspicion.

Then later overnight?

Not yet.

Dennis lived small apartment.

At age ten, Sophie asked overnight.

Rebecca said no first.

Not ready.

Court? If Dennis has parental rights, visitation could be ordered. But after severe offense, court may condition. Eventually supervised/step-up plan. Could allow one overnight after sustained years.

We can later.

Then my role.

I worried I would lose granddaughter as Dennis rehabilitated.

Embarrassing.

Therapist asked:

“Do you want him to fail so she needs you?”

“No.”

But part?

Maybe fear.

I acknowledged.

Love can become control too.

I told Rebecca:

“If Dennis becomes safe, I want Sophie to have him.”

She looked surprised.

“So do I.”

Neither wanted permanent fracture for own emotional security.

Then I stopped checking every detail after visits.

Asked Sophie:

“Anything you want to tell?”

Not interrogation.

Good.

Then house sale money.

I had invested.

I established education account not huge.

Sophie at ten said:

“I want be cleaning lady like Rosa.”

Rosa laughed:

“Finish school first.”

Then Sophie said:

“Why? Rosa is smart.”

“Yes.”

No class hierarchy.

Rosa eventually started own cleaning company with two employees. I offered loan?

She declined.

Bank microloan.

I hired her company.

No savior.

Then Dennis repaid Rosa directly for lost work on discovery day? He could as restitution.

He wrote apology.

Rosa accepted words but said:

“You scared child in house I cleaned. I don't need friendship.”

Fine.

Then Trisha’s parents.

They established trust for Noah only, not Sophie? They were not related. Diane wanted gift Sophie.

Rebecca allowed one-time college savings contribution with no control/no strings.

Generous.

Then Sophie asked:

“Are they my grandparents?”

“No.”

“Can I call Diane Nana?”

“If she wants and you want.”

Diane cried.

Family expanded by choice.

Then Mia? Wrong story.

Then Elmer's electric bill from opening.

I almost forgot.

The unpaid bill represented finances. House sale made me comfortable but not wealthy beyond.

I paid.

No irony.

Then Dennis asked:

“Dad, why didn't you ever charge rent?”

“Thought I was helping you save.”

“I didn't save.”

“I know.”

“What did I learn?”

“That I could keep asking.”

“Yes.”

Then:

“If you could redo?”

“I’d charge modest rent and ask for plan.”

He nodded.

Not because rent prevents abuse, but boundaries.

Then one envelope from Carol's papers.

I found journal line:

Dennis is charming when ashamed. Elmer rescues when worried. Between them, problems disappear without being solved.

Carol saw us.

I laughed sadly.

Then shared with Dennis.

He said:

“Mom was rude.”

“Yes.”

May you like

Accurate.

Cliffhanger: When Sophie turned eleven and asked for her first overnight visit with Dennis, he agreed—but then shocked everyone by saying he did not think she should come.
