Chapter 7 - The Cart
Ground-floor security footage showed it.
Twenty minutes before balcony, Claire rolled a decorative plant stand into service corridor.
Anna later came through carrying linens and diverted across central atrium.
Exactly beneath balcony.
Claire had created route.
Then she called Rebecca.
Then Peter arrived.
Then she watched Anna.
Then lifted Sophie.
This was planned.
Not necessarily days.
But at least twenty minutes.
Claire insisted:
“I never thought Anna would miss.”
Anna stared.
“You gambled Sophie’s life on me.”
Claire whispered:
“I knew you’d run.”
Anna’s hands shook.
“You didn’t know anything.”
That distinction mattered.
Anna’s successful rescue did not make act less dangerous.
Then why slap Anna afterward and demand Sophie?
Because Claire panicked.
Plan had been:
Sophie falls,
Anna catches,
Ethan sees footage,
incident triggers Rebecca release,
Claire claims she was reacting to threat? But camera showed Claire release. How could she expect avoid blame?
Claire said she planned delete footage.
She knew camera.
That explains earlier reveal.
She had admin access?
How?
Ethan had given temporary guest app to Claire for doors, not security admin.
But Claire watched Ethan enter PIN once.
She memorized.
She believed she could delete clip before he returned.
When Anna refused hand Sophie, Claire panicked and attacked.
Then Ethan arrived sooner than expected.
Why?
Anna had triggered foyer panic button? Prompt doesn't show. Could be Ethan was already on way. Better he came home early because meeting canceled. Claire expected 30 more minutes.
She lied instantly:
“Anna threw Sophie.”
Improvised.
Then Ethan saw camera.
Claire knew status light.
Her fake tears stopped because she realized she had not deleted.
Then Anna:
“That’s not worst part. She called someone before.”
Anna had overheard call.
But which call?
She heard Rebecca call fragments:
“She’s here. Ethan doesn’t know. After this, keep promise.”
So original Scene 6 clue referred Rebecca.
The secure Voss call happened slightly earlier and Anna did not hear.
Good.
Rebecca’s promise:
release Rachel file if ongoing danger proven.
Thus central call solved partially by Ch7.
But why would Rebecca ever agree conditional release based on danger?
Rachel’s instruction:
release if ongoing risk.
Rebecca interpreted conservatively.
Claire manipulated criterion.
Then Peter asked why Claire didn't just petition court.
She had.
Rebecca said process would take days.
Claire wanted immediately because next morning Hayes Foundation board planned vote on St. Vincent grant renewal.
Claire wanted Rachel file before vote to expose Voss and vindicate Diane.
Again motive tied to mother + deadline.
If file released after grant vote, could still expose, but Claire wanted dramatic reversal.
She believed Voss would receive another $12m research grant? Foundation grant to hospital program, not Voss personally.
Claire wanted stop.
Could she contact board?
She had incomplete evidence.
She wanted sealed file.
Then Ethan learned his own role.
As foundation chair, he had been sent summary of R-6 concerns two months earlier.
He never opened attachment.
His chief of staff flagged “historical sample-retention issue.”
Ethan delegated to Voss.
That was bad governance.
He did not knowingly cover.
But his passivity let Voss review himself.
Ethan recused from new grant vote.
Independent board paused.
Again no unilateral control.
Then Anna asked:
“Did Rachel know Ethan hadn’t read?”
Rebecca said:
“Yes.”
Rachel’s final notes:
Ethan is not corrupt. He is dangerously willing to assume professionals are doing their jobs.
That hurt.
Claire exploited not only Anna’s reliability.
