Chapter 12 - The Person on the Other End
Rebecca eventually gave Ethan the exact reconstructed call from her contemporaneous notes.
She had written immediately after Claire hung up because conversation frightened her.
2:14:52 p.m.
CLAIRE:
“She’s here.”
REBECCA:
“Who?”
CLAIRE:
“Anna. Ethan doesn’t know.”
REBECCA:
“Claire, what are you doing?”
CLAIRE:
“After this, you keep your promise.”
REBECCA:
“No. Stop. Don’t do anything until Ethan comes.”
Call ended.
Eleven seconds.
Anna heard only Claire side from corridor.
Thus her line:
“She called someone BEFORE she dropped her.”
True.
But she did not know who.
Claire’s wording made caller sound accomplice.
Caller was trying stop her.
That was central twist.
Rebecca’s “promise” also misunderstood.
She had not promised money, custody, escape or protection.
She promised to seek release of Rachel’s sealed R-6 archive if evidence showed ongoing risk to research participants or Sophie.
Claire decided to manufacture risk.
Then why did Claire collapse when Anna mentioned call?
Because she knew call created premeditation evidence.
Not because caller identity powerful.
If Ethan learned she had invoked Rebecca’s promise immediately before act, her “panic during threat” story collapsed.
That was why fear.
Then phone secrecy.
Claire refused device because it contained:
Rebecca call,
Voss secure contact,
Peter messages,
draft false narrative.
All.
Then Ethan asked Rebecca why she didn't call him immediately after Claire’s alarming call.
She had.
Call log:
2:15:19.
Ethan’s phone was on silent during meeting.
Then Rebecca called mansion security.
2:15:42.
By then Sophie already caught.
So Rebecca attempted intervene.
No accomplice.
Then Ethan realized his front door opened around 2:17 because he had been arriving anyway, not due call.
Timing.
Rebecca’s actions helped clear.
Then Claire had told Anna:
“Give her to me!”
Why?
She wanted regain Sophie before Ethan arrived, calm baby, delete camera, push Peter narrative later.
Anna refused.
Then slap.
Claire’s plan spiraled.
Then Ethan’s security camera.
Why Claire forgot?
She did not.
She intended delete.
But Ethan arrived too early and Anna refused surrender.
The camera status light blinking made her realize footage still existed.
Thus:
fake tears stop.
Then “You forgot one thing.”
Ethan thought camera.
Actually Claire had remembered but failed to erase.
Still line works.
Then Anna:
“That’s not worst part.”
Why call worse than footage?
Because footage proved act.
Call proved it was planned to force something, not momentary loss of control.
That increased meaning.
Then Ethan asked:
“Who?”
Answer:
Rebecca Shaw.
But Rebecca was not villain.
The actual secret was what promise meant.
