Chapter 4 - The Promise
Police located prepaid device through traffic-camera correlation and purchase records.
Buyer:
Raymond Cole.
That seemed damning.
Except Raymond immediately produced receipt and explanation.
Claire had asked him buy phone for confidential source.
He did.
Bad professional judgment.
Not illegal by itself.
He claimed he never knew source identity.
Claire collected device from him.
Then apparently gave it to someone.
Who?
Claire finally spoke after attorney arrived.
“Rebecca Shaw.”
Rachel’s attorney.
Ethan stared.
Rebecca had handled Rachel’s estate.
Why would she use burner?
Rebecca voluntarily appeared.
She was furious Claire named her.
But admitted.
Rachel had discovered research-consent problems at St. Vincent before Sophie’s birth.
She worried Hayes Foundation leadership would suppress because reputational damage.
Rebecca advised document everything.
After Rachel died, Rebecca retained copies.
Claire approached.
Rebecca did not trust Ethan.
Why?
Because Ethan chaired Hayes Foundation board.
Rebecca assumed he would protect institution.
Was that fair?
Not entirely.
Ethan had never been told R-6 existed.
Then eleven-second call.
Was Rebecca on other end?
Yes.
She admitted.
Police obtained her device.
At 2:14 Claire called.
Rebecca remembered words differently:
Claire:
“She’s here.”
Rebecca:
“Who?”
Claire:
“Anna. Ethan doesn’t know.”
Rebecca:
“Then stop. Don’t do anything until he comes.”
Claire:
“After this, you keep your promise.”
Rebecca:
“What are you talking about?”
Call ended.
That changed everything.
Rebecca had not ordered balcony act.
She had told Claire stop.
What promise?
Rebecca had promised deliver Rachel’s sealed R-6 file if Claire could prove Sophie was in immediate danger from someone connected to foundation.
Claire believed she had proof.
What?
Three days earlier she found anonymous note in Sophie’s stroller:
THE SAMPLE SHOULD HAVE BEEN DESTROYED.
KEEP HER AWAY FROM R-6.
Claire assumed threat toward Sophie.
Rebecca disagreed.
Could mean sample, not child.
She refused hand over Rachel file until evidence stronger.
Claire became desperate.
Then Claire’s horrifying logic emerged.
She did not intend Sophie to die?
Security footage showed release from fifth floor.
Impossible to call safe.
No.
She knowingly created lethal danger.
Why?
Claire said she believed Anna would catch Sophie.
Everyone stared.
She had seen Anna entering ground-floor foyer below?
Camera angle.
At 2:15, before lifting Sophie, Claire looked down three times.
Ground-floor camera showed Anna crossing atrium carrying linens.
Claire knew Anna was below.
She claimed she released Sophie to force Anna to react, creating “proof” someone was watching Sophie?
That made no sense.
Claire’s attorney stopped.
Later she revised.
She wanted security footage to make Ethan immediately investigate Rachel’s files?
Still irrational.
There was another hidden piece.
Then Anna said:
“Claire wasn’t looking at me.”
“What?”
“Before she dropped Sophie, she looked across balcony.”
Security footage enhanced.
Across fifth-floor atrium, behind decorative glass, a figure stood briefly.
Someone else had been inside mansion.
Claire had been looking at them.
Who?
The figure disappeared down service stairs eleven seconds before Sophie fell.
Claire’s face went white when shown.
“That’s who I called.”
But Rebecca was caller.
“No,” Claire whispered. “Rebecca was the call you found.”
“There was another?”
Claire nodded.
“Through an app.”
