Chapter 10 - Rachel’s Last Audit
Rachel’s audit contained no secret accusation against Ethan.
That surprised him.
She criticized governance, but also wrote:
Ethan believes delegation is trust. He does not always understand that trust without verification becomes permission for stronger personalities to define reality.
Claire.
Voss.
Even Rebecca.
All had defined what Ethan knew.
He accepted.
Then he resigned foundation chair temporarily.

They commissioned governance review.
Result:
Ethan had no evidence of knowing R-6 violations.
But conflict-management weak because Voss reviewed issue involving his own advisory work.
Ethan returned later only as ordinary director after reforms? Good.
He chose not to chair.
Then Anna.
She gave formal statement.
Investigators asked:
“Why did you run?”
She looked offended.
“A baby was falling.”
No heroic speech.
Instinct.
Could she have missed?
Absolutely.
Trajectory modeling showed Claire released Sophie approximately 17 meters above floor from fifth-floor balcony. Fall time under 2 seconds. Anna had tiny window.
Prompt timing unrealistic 2.5s but story can say ~1.9 sec. She sprinted/slide.
Claire’s belief rescue guaranteed was objectively absurd.
Expert reconstruction made clear.
Anna had been about six meters from landing zone.
She reacted immediately.
Sophie landed across forearms/chest.

Baby checked.
No injury.
This reinforced seriousness.
Then Claire’s attorney stopped arguing “planned rescue” as mitigation beyond intent not to kill.

Charges? He had trespassed? Claire invited; Ethan didn't authorize. Could be no charges after cooperation. His anonymous note irresponsible but not crime.

Rebecca’s secrecy criticized by estate court but she followed plausible reading of Rachel instructions. She cooperated.
Voss faced institutional/professional consequences for R-6 concealment.
No one else ordered balcony act.
Central call:
Claire called Rebecca to force promise.
Secure Voss call separate.
Neither commanded.
Then Ethan asked Claire through counsel:
“Why did you say ‘after this, keep your promise’ if you already planned event?”
Claire answered in writing:
Because I wanted Rebecca committed before I did it.
That chilled.
She had sought guarantee.
Rebecca’s response on call had been:
“Stop. Don’t do anything until Ethan comes.”
Claire ignored.
Thus call actually contained attempted warning.
The mystery’s expected mastermind reversed.
Person on other end tried prevent.
Then Emma? no.
Sophie’s trust.
R-6 scandal did not affect inheritance.
Foundation assets not Ethan’s personal wealth.
Claire’s mother had no claim.
No financial jackpot.
Claire’s motive was identity and vindication.

Emotionally powerful but not rationally worth danger.

Then Anna asked Claire at sentencing? Maybe no direct contact.

For now she writes:
You trusted my love for Sophie enough to use it against her.
That line strong.

Then Ethan found something Rachel had recorded in audit notes:
If Claire ever finds this, someone needs to tell her that proving Mom was hurt is not same as proving Mom was innocent.
That became core.

All retained samples inventoried.
Unauthorized remnants destroyed under independent verification.
Participants notified.
No evidence Sophie’s sample remained.
Sophie’s cord sample had been destroyed years earlier after 72-hour delay.
So anonymous note threat gone.
No one hunting Sophie.
Good payoff.
Then a question:
Why did Peter say “Rachel died trying to understand it”? He didn't exactly. Claire did. Rachel did audit before death, but death unrelated. Clarify.
She worked on audit during final weeks.
Then cardiomyopathy sudden.
No causation.
Claire had emotionally fused.
Investigators found no evidence anyone knew Rachel had heart condition or caused death.
Close.
Then Ethan visited Rachel’s grave.
No melodramatic vow.
He said:
“You were right about me.”
