Chapter 9 - A Safe Haven

Ethan refused to let the police take Lily or the baby to a state holding facility. Using his family’s influence, he arranged for both of them to be transferred to a private, secure medical suite at the city's top hospital, where a team of pediatricians immediately examined the newborn.

By evening, the baby was pronounced healthy and strong, resting peacefully in a plastic crib beside Lily’s hospital bed. Lily had been showered, her matted hair washed clean, and dressed in soft cotton pajamas. She sat up in bed, holding a warm bowl of soup Ethan had personally ordered for her from the hospital's private kitchen.

Ethan sat in a chair beside her bed, his navy tuxedo replaced by a simple gray sweater and trousers. He watched the sleeping baby with a soft expression, his usual cold, intimidating demeanor completely absent in the quiet room.

“You were very brave today, Lily,” Ethan said softly, setting a glass of juice on her tray. “Most people would have been too terrified to stand up to people like the Montgomerys.”

Lily looked down at her soup, her eyes glistening. “Maya told me that you were a good man, Mr. Vance,” she whispered. “She saw you on the news months ago and told me that if anything ever happened to her, you were the only person powerful enough to protect this baby from her father.”
