Senator Montgomery realized there was no way to deny the photograph. He stepped toward Ethan, his tone shifting from pleading to subtle threat. He reminded Ethan that the Vance family had invested over fifty million dollars into the upcoming municipal development project—a project that required the Senator's personal signature to proceed.
“If you walk out of this room with that girl and call the police, that project dies today,” the Senator said coldly, his political teeth finally showing. “Your family will face financial ruin, Ethan. Think about your legacy.”
Ethan stared at the older man for a long, silent moment. He looked down at the tiny baby sleeping peacefully against his chest, her small hand resting against his white shirt, the gold clover charm glittering under the chandelier light.

Slowly, Ethan walked over to the side table, picked up his phone, and dialed a number on speakerphone. The voice of his chief financial officer answered on the second ring. Ethan didn't hesitate for a single second.
“Cancel the Montgomery merger,” Ethan commanded, his voice steady and unyielding. “Liquidate our shares in their holding company, and release the internal audit reports to the Federal District Attorney's office immediately.”
