Chapter 7 - Patricia Wynn
Patricia Wynn was sixty-one now and still living in New York.
She had reinvented herself as a private family-placement consultant.
Her attorney insisted all work legal.
Old St. Vincent records suggested otherwise.
Patricia admitted speaking to Rachel the night twins were born.
She denied proposing illicit adoption.
“I said the Harts were approved respite caregivers.”
They weren’t.
Not under hospital program.
Why were they present?
Patricia said Daniel had requested information about financial support.
Again misleading.
Daniel asked billing office about medical bills.
Patricia transformed it into interest in placement.
She had promised Harts “possible emergency newborn placement.”
That violated policy.
Then Rachel approached her in panic.
Patricia told Rachel there was only one legal way to remove Liam without Emma awake:
temporary kinship consent.
Rachel said Emma couldn’t sign.
Patricia allegedly replied:
“Then wait.”
Rachel claimed Patricia showed her where Emma’s scanned signature was in system.
Patricia denied.
Digital logs told more.
Patricia accessed Emma’s prenatal intake form nineteen minutes before Rachel uploaded forged consent.
Coincidence unlikely.
Why help Rachel?
Because Patricia wanted Liam out of hospital quickly.
Whether with Harts or Rachel.
Why?
Marcus Vale had discovered Patricia’s off-book placement communications and planned report her next morning.
If Liam remained in nursery, auditors would see Harts had been invited without authorization.
If Liam left under family kinship form, Patricia could claim no outside placement occurred.
Rachel’s impulsive desire became Patricia’s escape route.
Then Marcus made his own catastrophic decision.
He discovered Rachel had removed Liam using forged consent.
He could have called police immediately.
But doing so would expose Patricia, hospital failure and his own negligence for allowing unauthorized caregivers near nursery.
So Marcus tried resolve quietly.
He called Rachel.
She refused return.
He panicked.
Then he changed Liam’s chart to deceased.
Why?
To close open nursery census before morning audit.
A temporary falsification, he claimed.
He intended reverse next day after retrieving infant.
Instead Rachel disappeared.
By then correcting record meant admitting false death certificate.
Marcus froze.
He allowed lie to become permanent.
Again:
fear of exposure turning temporary fraud into years of harm.
Emma asked:
“Who authorized cremation?”
Marcus.
“What was in container?”
Placental tissue.
“Who told Daniel my son died?”
Marcus.
“Who looked me in the face and said you did everything you could?”
Marcus began crying.
“I did.”
No excuse.
Patricia’s scheme had begun chain.
Rachel physically took Liam.
Marcus institutionalized lie.
Nora continued hiding.
Every adult had opportunity to stop.
None did.
Then investigators searched Patricia’s archived files.
One envelope:
COLE / TWIN B.
Inside photograph of Liam as newborn.
Back:
R.C. HAS CHILD.
M.V. CLOSED FILE.
D.C. BELIEVES DEATH.
E.C. MUST NOT BE CONTACTED.
Initials obvious.
Rachel Cole.
Marcus Vale.
Daniel Cole.
Emma Cole.
But final line beneath:
IF RACHEL BREAKS, USE THE FIRE.
Emma frowned.
“What fire?”
Rachel went pale.
Because her disappearance had not originally been supposed to involve a river.

And Patricia knew before Rachel staged anything.
