Chapter 3 - The Locket Daniel Had Made
Emma remembered the silver locket before she remembered ordering it.
Daniel had commissioned it during pregnancy.
At the twenty-week scan, doctors confirmed identical twin boys.
Daniel laughed for ten straight minutes.
That night he said:
“We need something they can keep when they’re older.”
He ordered two matching silver lockets.
One for each boy.
Inside each:
TO OUR TWIN SONS.
Emma had chosen photographs after birth from hospital photographer.
Except she thought only Noah’s locket was completed.
After Liam “died,” she told jeweler not to finish second.
Daniel later said the original had been lost somewhere in the hospital.
Now Liam carried it.
Which meant somebody had taken it from maternity ward after delivery.
The newer inscription—
SHE KNOWS WHO TOOK ME—
was not original.
A jeweler confirmed it had been added years later with different engraving tool.
Probably within last twelve months.
Likely Nora.
Police searched Nora Brooks’s apartment.
No luxury.
No hidden fortune.
No evidence Liam had been abused.
Photos showed a modest but loving childhood.
Schoolbooks.
Birthday candles.
Handmade Halloween costumes.
Liam had not lived openly under his birth name.
To neighbors, he was Liam Brooks.
Nora claimed he was her grandson.
There was no birth certificate in apartment.
Instead investigators found a folder:
LIAM — WHEN I’M GONE.
Inside was a notarized statement.
Nora wrote that a woman named Rachel Cole had brought an infant to her seven years earlier.
Rachel said baby’s mother was medically unstable and father had authorized temporary care.
Nora believed it.
“Did Daniel authorize it?” Emma asked.
Investigators found no document.
Nora wrote that within days, Rachel returned and said:
“The hospital recorded him dead. Emma can never know yet.”
Nora wanted police.
Rachel begged.
She claimed powerful hospital administrator would take Liam permanently if authorities learned he survived.
Nora remained uncertain.
Then Rachel showed her newspaper report.
St. Vincent under investigation for irregular private newborn placements.
That investigation had existed.
Emma never knew.
It ended quietly.
No criminal charges.
One administrator resigned:
Dr. Marcus Vale.
Director of maternity operations.
Same man whose signature appeared on Liam’s death certificate.
Emma stared at name.
She remembered him.
Marcus had stood beside Daniel after she woke.
He had told her:
“I’m sorry. We did everything we could.”
Nora’s statement continued.
Rachel promised situation would last days.
Days became weeks.
Weeks became years.
Why did Nora continue participating?
Fear.
Attachment.
And eventually complicity.
She loved Liam.
She also knew returning him would expose what she had done.
Near end of statement, Nora wrote:
RACHEL DID NOT START THIS.
Emma leaned closer.
