Chapter 2 - The Son Emma Buried Without Seeing

Emma did not let Rachel take Liam.

She moved both boys behind her and called police.

Rachel did not flee.

That frightened Emma more.

She simply stood beside the black SUV as though she had expected this moment for years.

At the precinct, the first question was obvious.

Were Noah and Liam actually twins?

Emergency DNA testing was arranged with Emma’s consent.

The result was overwhelming.

Noah and Liam were full biological brothers.

Same mother.

Same father.

Monozygotic probability was extremely high—genetically identical twins.

Emma cried when investigator explained it.

“I had twins.”

She already knew that.

She had always known she delivered two boys.

But she had spent seven years believing one survived.

The birth had gone wrong.

At thirty weeks? Better near term. At thirty-seven weeks, Emma suffered severe hemorrhage during emergency C-section.

She remembered Noah crying.

Then another infant being lifted behind a curtain.

She lost consciousness shortly afterward.

When she woke, her husband Daniel told her Baby B had developed sudden respiratory collapse and died.

Emma demanded to see him.

Doctors advised against it because of her unstable condition.

She hated herself for accepting.

Three days later, Daniel showed her hospital paperwork.

Baby B:

LIAM COLE.

Time of death: 4:18 a.m.

They held a small private memorial.

There was no body in an open casket.

Hospital handled cremation.

Emma received a tiny urn.

She had kept it for seven years.

Now Liam sat alive ten feet away.

“Whose ashes are in my house?”

Nobody answered.

Rachel requested lawyer before making full statement.

But she said one thing voluntarily.

“I did not kill anyone.”

Emma stared at her.

“You let me bury my son.”

Rachel’s face broke for half a second.

“I know.”

“You let Noah grow up believing his brother died.”

“I know.”

“You let Mom and Dad bury you.”

Rachel looked away.

Their parents were both now dead.

Emma leaned forward.

“Why?”

Rachel’s attorney interrupted.

But Liam spoke first.

“She didn’t raise me.”

Everyone turned.

Rachel looked alarmed.

Liam continued.

“I lived with Nora.”

“Who’s Nora?”

“Nora Brooks.”

Rachel closed her eyes.

Liam said Nora had raised him in a small apartment outside Newark.

Rachel visited sometimes.

Sometimes months passed.

Liam had never called her Mom.

He called her Rachel.

Three weeks earlier Nora died unexpectedly from a stroke.

Rachel arrived the next day and told Liam they had to leave.

He refused.

She forced him into the black SUV.

That was why he said she took him.

Not from Emma seven years earlier?

Liam didn’t know.

He only knew Rachel had taken him from Nora’s apartment.

He escaped that morning while Rachel stopped for gas in Manhattan.

Why Manhattan?

Liam reached into hoodie and handed Emma folded card.

Nora’s handwriting:

IF ANYTHING HAPPENS TO ME, FIND EMMA COLE NEAR BRYANT PARK ON SATURDAY MORNING.

LOOK FOR THE BOY WHO HAS YOUR FACE.

Nora had known Emma’s routine.

She knew Noah.

She knew exactly where Liam came from.

At bottom:

THE LOCKET WILL MAKE HER UNDERSTAND.
