Chapter 6 - The Signature Rachel Used
The answer was inside hospital archive.
A temporary kinship-placement authorization.
Mother:
Emma Cole.
Infant:
Liam Cole.
Temporary caregiver:
Rachel Cole.
Signature:
Emma Cole.
Emma had never signed it.
Handwriting analysis identified likely source.
A prenatal hospital intake form from two months earlier.
Someone copied Emma’s signature.
Digital audit showed document uploaded using Rachel’s visitor-account credentials.
Rachel stopped denying.
“Yes.”
She forged it.
Before taking Liam.
Before Marcus called.
Before threats.
Before staged death.
Her hero story cracked.
“Why?”
Rachel stared at table.
Because Rachel had suffered a pregnancy loss five months before Emma gave birth.
Her son, Oliver, had been stillborn at thirty-four weeks.
Emma knew.
She had sat beside Rachel through funeral.
What Emma didn’t know was how badly Rachel deteriorated afterward.
Rachel attended therapy briefly then stopped.
When Emma’s twin pregnancy advanced, Rachel became intensely attached to babies.
She bought clothes.
Visited constantly.
Talked about helping.
On delivery night, seeing two living boys while still grieving Oliver overwhelmed her.
Then she overheard Patricia discussing possible placement.
Something inside Rachel converted threat into permission.
“I thought if somebody was going to take one of them…”
Emma finished coldly:
“You decided it should be you.”
Rachel cried.
“I thought temporarily.”
She forged kinship form so she could remove Liam before the Hart placement.
That part did interrupt Patricia’s unauthorized plan.
But Rachel also wanted Liam.
Both truths existed.
She saved him from one wrongful transfer by committing another.
Daniel did not ask her to take Liam.
Phone records recovered from old backup showed Rachel texted him:
I’M MOVING BABY B UNTIL THIS IS FIXED.
Daniel replied:
NO. BRING HIM BACK NOW.
Rachel deleted message.
Emma’s face collapsed.
Daniel had tried to stop it.
More texts:
RACHEL:
THEY WERE ABOUT TO GIVE HIM TO STRANGERS.
DANIEL:
CALL POLICE. DO NOT TAKE HIM.
RACHEL:
YOU DON’T UNDERSTAND.
DANIEL:
I UNDERSTAND THAT EMMA WILL WAKE UP AND ASK WHERE HER SON IS.
Rachel turned phone off afterward.
So Daniel had not sold Liam.
He had not approved disappearance.
Why then did he tell Emma Liam died?
Investigators found another message from Marcus to Daniel hours later:
BABY B SUFFERED FATAL EVENT. DO NOT DISCUSS PLACEMENT ISSUE WITH EMMA UNTIL REVIEW.
Daniel believed hospital.
He did not know Rachel still had Liam.
Marcus lied to him too.
Emma covered her mouth.
Daniel had spent five years believing same lie until his death.
Then Maya asked Rachel:
“Who told you to forge Emma’s signature?”
Rachel whispered:
“Patricia.”
Emma’s eyes narrowed.

So Rachel’s grief made her vulnerable.
But somebody had shown her exactly how to turn that grief into paperwork.
