Chapter 5 - Rachel’s First Story
Rachel finally talked.
Her first version made her sound almost heroic.
She had gone to nursery after Emma’s surgery.
She overheard Patricia Wynn speaking with Marcus.
Patricia said:
“The Hart family is already here.”
Rachel demanded explanation.
Marcus told her it was temporary placement until Emma stabilized.
Rachel knew Emma would never agree to give away child.
She confronted Daniel.
Daniel was frantic.
He said he had refused.
Then Rachel saw Liam being prepared for transfer.
She panicked.
She used family-access badge, picked him up and left hospital through staff corridor.
“I thought I was rescuing him.”
Emma asked:
“Then why didn’t you bring him to me?”
“You were unconscious.”
“Daniel?”
“He told me to get Liam somewhere safe.”
That would make Daniel complicit in removal but for protection.
Did evidence support it?
No recording.
No text.
Daniel had died two years earlier from pancreatic cancer.
Could not answer.
Rachel said she took Liam to Nora, an old family friend.
Plan:
one night.
Next morning, Rachel intended return to hospital with lawyer.
Instead Marcus called.
According to Rachel, he said:
“If Liam comes back, Patricia will say Rachel kidnapped him. Emma will lose both boys while court sorts it out.”
Rachel believed.
Then Marcus offered terrible solution:
temporarily record Liam as deceased while internal investigation shut placement operation down.
Rachel agreed.
Emma stared in horror.
“You agreed to a death certificate for my living child.”
“For a few days.”
“How many times are adults going to tell me that?”
Rachel cried.
“I was scared.”
“Seven years?”
“No. That part is different.”
Three days later, Patricia discovered Liam was with Nora.
She allegedly threatened Rachel.
Rachel claimed Patricia had private investigators and evidence that could make Daniel look like he sold child.
Rachel fled.
Her car was later found near Hudson River after a crash.
Blood in driver seat.
Rachel’s coat.
Phone.
No body recovered.
Family assumed river took her.
Eventually she was legally declared dead.
Rachel admitted staging scene.
She cut her palm for blood and sent car down embankment.
Then disappeared under name Rebecca Lane.
Emma looked disgusted.
“You staged your death while I was grieving my son.”
“I thought Patricia would stop looking.”
“Did she?”
“For a while.”
Rachel periodically visited Liam.
She never raised him directly because she feared being traced.
Nora did.
“Why not contact me anonymously?”
Rachel said:
“I thought if Patricia knew you had Liam, she’d come after both boys.”
Emma looked at detective.
“Is any of this true?”
Maya answered carefully:
“Some pieces are supported. Some aren’t.”
Then Nora’s statement provided contradiction.
Rachel had told Nora something very different seven years earlier.
Not that Patricia threatened Noah.
Not that Daniel asked her to take Liam.
Nora wrote:
RACHEL SAID SHE COULDN’T GIVE LIAM BACK BECAUSE EMMA WOULD NEVER FORGIVE HER FOR WHAT SHE HAD ALREADY DONE.
