Chapter 4 - The Woman in the Service Hall

Facial enhancement could not prove identity.

Victor watched footage repeatedly.

The woman moved like Sarah.

Same height.

Same habit of touching left ear when nervous.

But people saw what they wanted to see.

Police traced uniform.

Stolen from laundry locker.

Then bracelet became stronger clue.

Victor had custom-made it for Margaret on twentieth anniversary.

Inside clasp were initials:

M.D.

Sarah inherited it.

No duplicate existed.

So either Sarah planted recording—

or someone had her bracelet.

Victor asked Lily when she last saw mother wearing it.

“Before Mommy went away.”

“Did she ever take it off?”

“Only when she slept.”

Lily remembered something else.

“Mom said Grandma gave it a secret.”

Margaret had been dead before Lily was born.

“What secret?”

Lily shrugged.

“She said blue part opens.”

Police examined old photographs.

Blue stone setting appeared unusually thick.

Victor had never noticed.

Jeweler located original order.

Bracelet was modified two years after Victor purchased it.

Requested by Margaret.

A hidden compartment had been added beneath stone.

What did Margaret hide?

Unknown.

Bracelet remained with mysterious woman.

Then Victor received call.

Blocked number.

A woman whispered:

“Stop looking for Sarah.”

“Who is this?”

“You already lost one daughter.”

Victor’s heart stopped.

“One?”

The caller corrected herself.

“One person you loved.”

But mistake lingered.

Victor had only one daughter.

Sarah.

Unless caller meant something else.

Victor refused speculative genealogy.

He sent recording to police.

Voice analysis eventually matched Claire with moderate confidence.

Claire denied making call.

Her phone showed she was in custody when call occurred.

Someone mimicked her?

Or voice analysis wrong.

Then hotel manager reported missing master key used that morning.

Issued to temporary employee:

Elaine Mercer.

Address false.

Photograph showed same woman from service hall.

Police found abandoned uniform in parking structure.

Pocket contained receipt from storage company.

Unit 214.

Victor and detectives arrived.

Inside:

Case 15.

Locked.

Daniel stared when shown photograph.

“That’s it.”

Before opening, police documented everything.

Latch clicked.

Inside were no remains.

No captive.

No sensational horror.

Paper records.

Hundreds.

Employee-benefit files from Victor’s old Dawson hotels.

And beneath them—

a sealed medical folder bearing Margaret Dawson’s name.

Victor opened it.

Diagnosis matched history.

Stroke.

But another document did not.

A beneficiary designation dated four months before Margaret became ill.

She removed Victor as executor of a private employee-restoration trust.

Replacement:

Sarah Dawson.

Sarah had been only thirteen.

Impossible.

A minor could not serve.

Document looked fraudulent.

Signature resembled Margaret’s.

Then handwriting examiner noticed something.

Date had been altered.

Original year was not seventeen years ago.

It was three years ago.

Someone created fake document long after Margaret died.

And Claire’s name appeared as witness.
