Chapter 13 - Margaret’s Envelope
Richard stole Case 16 because he knew Margaret’s envelope existed.
He had searched for it twenty years.
Why?
Margaret had discovered old employee-benefit fraud.
But before accusing Ashford, she made an error herself.
She altered internal Dawson payroll categories to preserve benefits for twenty-seven workers Victor’s failing company could no longer afford.
Her intention was protective.
Method unauthorized.
When Ashford acquired hotels, discrepancies made employees appear improperly classified.
Malcolm Voss exploited confusion to reduce obligations further.
Leonard Pike forged Victor’s signature.
Layers accumulated.
Margaret later realized her own workaround had contributed to vulnerability.
She wrote Victor full explanation.
Richard feared letter would show Ashford knew discrepancies during acquisition.
He wanted it.
When Sarah discovered Case 16, Richard followed investigation.
He did not abduct Sarah.
He did steal case after Sarah hid it.
He staged midnight return because federal scrutiny made concealment impossible.
Why not simply surrender?
Pride.
Fear.
Decades of habit.
Did he threaten Lily?
“No.”
Forensics supported.
Threat messages came through different device.
Who?
Investigators traced them to prepaid phone purchased by Graham Holt.
Graham admitted sending threats after arrest evidence confronted him.
He wanted Sarah to surrender Case 16 because it exposed his role in suppressing old claims.
He never intended physically harm Lily, he claimed.
Threat itself was criminal.
He used child’s name because he knew it would terrify Sarah.
Thus no secret kidnapper remained.
Then Margaret’s envelope could finally be opened.
Victor did it privately with Sarah.
Inside were six pages.
Margaret wrote:
Victor, I need you to know I was wrong to believe you signed amendment.
She had discovered Leonard’s forgery.
She also confessed altering payroll classifications before sale.
“I thought I was saving people’s pensions. Instead I created records someone else could manipulate.”
She did not die because of conspiracy.
She died naturally after stroke.
But she spent final months trying repair financial harm.
She asked Victor to establish independent employee reserve if truth surfaced.
Victor cried.
For seventeen years he believed wife died angry with him.
She had not.
Final paragraph:
Sarah may someday try to fix this herself. Don’t let her inherit my habit of carrying every problem alone.
Sarah covered face.
Margaret had predicted daughter’s greatest flaw.
Victor looked at her.
“You did exactly that.”
“I know.”
“What happens now?”
“I surrender everything.”
Sarah’s unauthorized transfers would be reviewed.
Prosecutors considered cooperation and fact funds returned.
No magical immunity.
No instant punishment.
Actual process.
Then Daniel asked one question.
“Why did Sarah write ‘one contains why Mom died’?”
Sarah answered:
“Because I wrote it when I still believed stress from benefit scandal caused her stroke.”
Medical review showed no basis for assigning cause.
“I was wrong.”
That was important.
The clue was Sarah’s belief, not objective proof of murder.
Then Claire entered.
She had been released pending assault charges from ballroom incident.
She looked at Lily from distance but did not approach.
“I owe her apology.”
Sarah’s expression hardened.
“You owe her more than that.”
“I know.”
Claire had been framed financially.
She had also assaulted child.
One truth did not erase other.
Then Daniel revealed gala organizers found another object backstage after police search.
A pale flower pressed inside envelope.
Camellia.
Attached note:
MARGARET’S LEDGER HAS ONE PAGE MISSING.
Sarah looked at Victor.
“What page?”
“Page forty-seven.”
Sarah knew immediately.
“That page listed employees whose benefits were transferred outside Dawson plan.”
“How many?”
“One.”
“Who?”
“I never saw name. It had already been torn out.”
Victor frowned.
Could this be new mystery? We need still solve central case in Ch15 and use separate mystery at end. Page47 can become lead but should not distract too early. Maybe solve in Ch14 as related current arc.
Security footage showed note was placed by Anna Pike.
She admitted.
“My father kept page.”
Leonard Pike had removed it before forging amendment.
