The Black Case Lily Called Mom / Chapter 11 / 15

Chapter 11 - Helen Ward

Helen opened door before police knocked.

“Sarah told me this day would come.”

“Where is she?”

“Safe.”

Victor’s anger rose.

“Everyone keeps saying that.”

Helen did not flinch.

“Then maybe ask why your daughter doesn’t feel safe coming home.”

That struck harder than insult.

Helen explained.

After Daniel released Sarah from records room, Sarah called Helen.

She was shaken.

Not because Graham threatened her.

Because Case 16 contained evidence Sarah had herself broken law during investigation.

Unauthorized transfers.

Stolen credentials.

Secret recordings.

She feared arrest would separate her from Lily.

Helen picked her up.

Sarah wanted one night to decide whether surrender.

Then someone attacked Helen’s car.

Not violent ambush.

Tires slashed outside motel.

Envelope on windshield:

RETURN CASE 16 OR LILY GETS THE NEXT ONE.

Sarah believed threat credible.

She vanished again.

Helen helped.

For six months Sarah moved between safe locations while Anna, Helen and eventually federal investigator reviewed records.

Why not tell Victor?

Because Sarah believed Victor’s phone/email compromised through cloned legacy credentials.

Reasonable initially.

But for six months?

Helen admitted:

“I told her to call you.”

“She wouldn’t?”

“She was ashamed.”

Same pattern.

People staying away after danger diminished because return became emotionally harder.

Victor asked:

“Is Sarah alive today?”

“Yes.”

“Have you spoken recently?”

“Yesterday.”

“Where?”

Helen refused until Sarah consented.

Police could compel eventually, but Victor asked them give Sarah opportunity to surrender voluntarily.

Then Helen explained flower.

White camellia was Margaret’s symbol.

Margaret used to place one on employee files requiring private hardship help.

Sarah asked Anna to give Lily camellia at gala.

Why involve Lily?

Sarah believed Victor would ignore anonymous evidence but never ignore Lily.

It was manipulative.

Victor hated it.

Helen agreed.

“She made bad choice.”

Sarah had orchestrated Case 14 appearing at gala.

She wanted Daniel’s lie exposed publicly enough he could not bury it.

She did not anticipate Victor punching him or Claire attacking Lily.

No one did.

So rattling sound?

Recorder had been set to play when case tipped/opened? But prompt has rattling inside. Need explain. Case toppled, recorder shifted and auto-played due impact. Good.

Daniel sat on case because he recognized Sarah’s voice and panicked.

Claire screamed “don’t open it” because she knew Sarah had threatened to expose Blackwell archive at gala and feared Case 16 evidence.

But Case 14 held only recording.

Why did Lily say “Mom”?

She recognized voice.

Everything around black case now had rational structure.

Except Sarah’s current location.

Then Helen called her.

Put phone on speaker.

“Dad?”

Victor closed eyes.

“Sarah.”

“I’m sorry.”

“Come home.”

“I can’t yet.”

“Why?”

“Because somebody has Case 16.”

“I thought you did.”

“I had copies. Original disappeared.”

“Who took it?”

“I don’t know.”

“What’s inside original that copies don’t show?”

Sarah paused.

“An envelope Margaret sealed before she died.”

Victor’s pulse changed.

“What does it say?”

“I never opened it.”

“Why?”

“Because it’s addressed to you.”

“Then bring it.”

“I can’t.”

“Why?”

“Because whoever stole Case 16 sent me photograph of envelope yesterday.”

“What do they want?”

May you like

Sarah answered:

“Lily.”
