Chapter 9 - The Night Julian Met Richard

Julian denied knowing Richard personally.

Then I showed him parking records from Leo’s school.

His car.

Richard’s car.

Same evening.

Three months ago.

He sat down.

“Fine.”

That word should never begin a marriage conversation.

Richard had contacted Julian six months earlier.

Not as my father.

As an attorney representing “legacy financial interests.”

He warned Julian that someone was falsifying records against me.

Julian believed him.

That was where the idea to document my behavior began.

Richard was helping Julian “protect” me from the very campaign Richard may have designed.

Elegant.

If true.

“Why hide this?”

“Because he threatened Leo.”

I froze.

“He said if I involved you directly, whoever was creating the records might escalate.”

“Did he specifically threaten Leo?”

Julian hesitated.

No.

Again, fear doing the work for the manipulator.

Richard merely suggested children could become “complicated in contested capacity cases.”

Julian supplied the nightmare himself.

Then my phone rang.

Leo’s preschool.

My heart stopped.

He was safe.

But a man had attempted to pick him up using an emergency authorization form.

Name:

Richard Vale.

School staff refused because he wasn't on the approved list.

By the time police arrived, he was gone.

That ended any debate about whether Richard was harmless.

Sophie called again.

“I told you.”

“Where are you?”

“Not safe.”

“From Richard?”

Long silence.

Then:

“From Daniel.”

My brother turned toward me.

“What?”

Sophie claimed Daniel had been receiving money from Richard for years.

Daniel exploded.

“She’s lying.”

“Show me your accounts.”

He refused.

Julian laughed without humor.

“Interesting hill to die on.”

Daniel finally opened his banking app.

Payments.

Consulting income.

Vale Advisory Services.

$7,500 every quarter.

For five years.

My mother covered her mouth.

Daniel said:

“It was legitimate insurance work.”

“Did you know who Richard was?”

Silence.

My answer.

“Daniel.”

“I found out later.”

“How much later?”

“Three years ago.”

“You kept taking the money.”

“Yes.”

The room went quiet.

Then Daniel said something unexpected.

“Because I was feeding him false information.”

Mom stared.

Julian stared.

I stared.

He claimed he had discovered Richard’s interest in me and decided to stay close.

Hero story.

Maybe true.

Maybe not.

Then Daniel handed me an encrypted drive.

“I’ve been collecting his communications.”

On it were emails.

Payments.

Medical forgeries.

Instructions involving me.

One sender repeatedly used the initials S.L.

Sophie Lane?

Possibly.

Then I opened the latest message.

Tonight.

Finalize Leo transfer before Emily learns Richard is not acting alone.

I looked at Daniel.

“Who else?”

He didn’t know.

Then Mom whispered:

“I do.”

We turned.

She looked at Julian.

May you like

And said:

“His mother.”
