Chapter 12 - Sophie’s Real Mother

Sophie’s birth certificate was forged.

Karen’s name had been used to hide the real mother.

Margaret Harper.

Julian’s mother.

The room became very still.

Julian stared at her.

“You had a child with Richard?”

Margaret began crying.

“Before your father.”

Twenty-three years earlier, Margaret and Richard had an affair.

She became pregnant.

Richard wanted the baby.

Margaret did not trust him.

Karen—my mother—helped arrange the adoption.

That was why both women had been connected for decades.

Sophie was Richard’s daughter.

Julian’s half-sister.

Not mine.

Everything shifted again.

“Why did Richard tell her she was my sister?”

“To control her.”

Margaret’s voice cracked.

“He told Sophie Karen was her mother because he knew it would push her toward Emily.”

Sophie had spent years believing I was the sister her mother kept.

Resentment.

Curiosity.

Obsession.

Richard used all of it.

Then Julian asked the question nobody wanted.

“So Sophie is my sister.”

“Yes.”

“The woman everyone thought I was sleeping with.”

“Yes.”

I almost laughed from emotional exhaustion.

The affair had been fake.

But the betrayal was real in ten other directions.

Then Mom confessed why she had helped Margaret.

Richard had already shown dangerous behavior toward me as a child.

Not physical violence.

Possession.

He would appear unexpectedly.

Send gifts.

Demand photographs.

My father—my legal father—threatened him.

Grandma created the trust partly to keep financial power away from Richard.

But she made a fatal mistake by naming him temporary representative under an old legal assumption that biological fathers deserved standing.

By the time she learned what he was, she was dying.

She tried to amend it.

Didn’t finish.

“So Richard needs me incompetent before forty.”

“Yes.”

“Why now?”

Daniel answered.

“Because he’s broke.”

Richard’s investment empire was collapsing.

Regulators were closing in.

My trust was not $8.7 million anymore.

Commercial property appreciation had pushed it above $19 million.

Enough to cover losses temporarily.

Then Claire said:

“That still doesn't explain the fake medical evidence.”

Everyone looked at Daniel.

He shook his head.

“Not me.”

Margaret.

“No.”

Mom.

“No.”

Claire.

“No.”

Julian.

“No.”

Then I realized we were missing someone.

Sophie.

I called her.

She answered.

“Emily.”

“Did you create the medical file?”

Silence.

“Yes.”

Everyone froze.

“Why?”

“Because Richard told me to.”

“So you work for him.”

“No.”

“Then explain.”

Her voice broke.

“He said if I didn’t help, he’d destroy Julian.”

“What?”

“He has evidence.”

“What evidence?”

Sophie whispered:

“That Julian killed someone.”

My husband went pale.

Not confused.

May you like

Pale.

And suddenly the affair was no longer the secret I feared most.
