Chapter 2 - The Lie He Chose First

“What did he say?”

Julian’s voice was casual.

Too casual.

Leo was building a plastic train track across the living-room rug.

I leaned against the kitchen island.

“He said there’s a lady who visits while I’m working.”

Julian blinked.

Then smiled.

“Oh.”

Just that.

“Oh.”

“She goes upstairs.”

His fingers stopped against his phone.

“Kids imagine things.”

“Leo doesn’t usually invent blonde women.”

He laughed.

Wrong reaction.

Not nervous enough to be caught cheating.

Not confused enough to be innocent.

Calculated.

“That neighbor girl came over once to pick up a package.”

“Which neighbor?”

Julian opened the refrigerator.

“Emily, come on. I don’t keep a visitor log.”

There.

I had been married to him long enough to recognize when irritation was being used as camouflage.

I let the subject die.

At least outwardly.

After dinner, Julian went upstairs to shower.

I checked his jacket.

No lipstick.

No receipt.

No obvious evidence.

Then I smelled the perfume again near the collar.

Coconut and vanilla.

I photographed the inside label.

A faint streak of beige makeup.

At 8:42, Julian returned downstairs.

“Where’s my phone charger?”

“Bedroom.”

His expression changed.

Why would that matter?

I smiled.

“Want me to grab it?”

“No.”

Too fast.

He went himself.

I heard the drawer open upstairs.

Then another.

Then silence.

When he came back, his face was perfectly normal.

But his phone remained in his hand for the rest of the evening.

At 11:30, he fell asleep.

I didn’t.

I opened our home-security app.

Four exterior cameras.

Doorbell.

Driveway.

Backyard.

Garage.

No interior cameras because Julian had always said recording inside the house felt “creepy.”

Interesting, considering someone had been entering our bedroom.

I searched thirty days.

Nothing obvious.

Then I noticed gaps.

Every Tuesday between 1:00 and 3:00 p.m., the doorbell archive had missing segments.

Not offline warnings.

Deleted clips.

I checked administrator access.

Two users.

Emily Harper.

Julian Harper.

Last deletion:

Today.

2:17 p.m.

While I was working.

I stared at Julian sleeping beside me.

Then his phone lit up.

One message preview.

No name.

Just a number.

Did she see the necklace?

I stopped breathing.

Before I could reach for the phone, Julian’s eyes opened.

He saw the screen.

Saw me looking.

And flipped the phone facedown.

Neither of us spoke.

Then he whispered:

“Emily.”

Not lovingly.

May you like

Warningly.

As if the conversation he had been avoiding was no longer his to control.
