Chapter 4 - The Woman He Said I Was Becoming

Sophie sent me everything.

I drove home with my necklace in my pocket and the feeling that I had stepped sideways into someone else’s marriage.

Julian wasn’t simply cheating.

He was building a version of me.

Forgetful.

Unstable.

Unsafe.

But why?

Divorce?

Custody?

Money?

I checked every account.

No obvious missing funds.

No secret mortgage.

No luxury spending.

Julian’s behavior around money had always bordered on obsessive.

That suddenly felt less reassuring.

People who track every dollar know exactly where to hide one.

At noon, I called the physician named on the fake psychiatric letter.

Dr. Samuel Kline.

Real psychiatrist.

Real license.

Wrong patient.

His office had never treated me.

“Was this letter written by Dr. Kline?”

The office manager asked me to email it.

Twenty minutes later, she called back.

“No.”

“Has his signature been forged before?”

Silence.

Then:

“Mrs. Harper, I think you should speak to an attorney.”

Not police.

Attorney.

Interesting.

I asked why.

She refused.

At 2:00 p.m., Julian texted:

Home early tonight. Dinner?

I replied:

Sounds good ❤️

Then I searched our home.

Not dramatically.

Methodically.

Study.

Garage.

Basement.

Guest room.

Nothing.

Finally, our bedroom.

The empty velvet box still sat open.

I examined it.

Dust around the base.

One clean rectangular patch underneath.

Something had been stored beneath it.

I lifted the drawer liner.

A memory card.

Not mine.

I inserted it into an old laptop.

Video files.

Interior surveillance.

Our bedroom had been recorded.

For months.

From a camera facing the bed.

I nearly vomited.

Then I watched.

Not intimacy.

Something stranger.

Julian entering when I was at work.

Sophie photographing the room.

Julian moving objects.

My keys.

My medication.

Leo’s school folder.

Then later, Julian returning them to different places.

He was manufacturing mistakes.

Evidence that I misplaced things.

That I forgot.

That I was unreliable.

Then a clip from six weeks earlier.

Julian stood alone beside our bed speaking to someone on speakerphone.

Male voice.

“If she starts questioning her memory, increase frequency.”

Julian:

“She isn’t questioning it.”

Voice:

“Then make her.”

I froze the audio.

I knew that voice.

I had heard it at Christmas.

At Leo’s birthday.

At our wedding.

My brother.

Daniel.
