Chapter 11 - My Best Friend’s Access

Claire Benson knew everything about me.

College roommate.

Maid of honor.

Leo’s godmother.

The woman who sat with me after my miscarriage seven years earlier while Julian slept on a hospital chair.

She also managed Julian’s accounting practice.

Perfect access.

Perfect trust.

I called her.

She answered cheerfully.

“Hey! How’s my favorite nurse?”

“Come over.”

A pause.

“Everything okay?”

“No.”

She arrived thirty minutes later.

One look at the room—Julian, Mom, Daniel, Margaret—and her expression hardened.

“So.”

Not confusion.

“So.”

Julian looked devastated.

“You hired Sophie?”

Claire sat down.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To get Emily’s attention.”

I laughed.

Apparently stealing my necklace was now a communication strategy.

Claire had known Richard for years.

Not as an ally.

As an enemy.

Her father had lost his retirement savings through one of Richard’s investment schemes.

He killed himself afterward.

Claire spent twelve years proving Richard manipulated vulnerable clients, moved assets and used legal guardianship structures to seize control.

“You could have told me.”

“I tried.”

“When?”

“Remember when I asked whether you knew your grandmother had a trust?”

I did.

Two years earlier.

I thought it was random.

“You said your mother told you there wasn’t one.”

“So you decided to stage an affair?”

“I needed you to question Julian.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn’t know whether he was compromised.”

Julian looked at her.

“You forged payments from my account.”

“Yes.”

“You put Sophie in my house.”

“Yes.”

“You stole my wife’s necklace.”

“Sophie did.”

That distinction earned no points.

Then Claire revealed the bigger truth.

Sophie had approached her first.

Not Richard.

Sophie wanted out.

She had spent years under Richard’s control and believed he planned to use my trust as the final liquidity source for failing investment vehicles.

She needed me alert.

But she did not trust Julian.

Or Daniel.

Or Mom.

So she chose Claire.

“Why didn’t Sophie just come to me?”

Claire looked at me.

“Because Richard told her you would choose your family over a stranger.”

That hurt because it might have been true.

Then Claire handed me a drive.

“Everything Richard has done.”

Before I touched it, Daniel said:

“Don’t.”

We turned.

His face had changed.

Claire stared at him.

“You.”

Daniel stood.

I had never seen my brother afraid of Claire.

Not once.

She whispered:

“You’ve been deleting my access.”

He said nothing.

Then I understood.

Daniel had not been feeding Richard false information.

At least not entirely.

He had been feeding Claire false information too.

Playing both sides.

“Why?”

My brother looked at me.

Tears filled his eyes.

“Because Richard isn’t trying to take the trust.”

“What?”

“He’s trying to keep it away from Sophie.”

Claire laughed.

Daniel didn’t.

Then he said:

“Sophie isn’t your sister.”

Silence.

My mother stood.

“Daniel.”

He looked at her.

“You’ve lied enough.”

Then he faced me.

“Sophie is Richard’s daughter.”

“But Karen isn’t her mother.”

I turned toward Mom.

She closed her eyes.

And whispered:

May you like

“No.”

For the first time, Sophie’s existence became something even my mother seemed afraid to explain.
