Chapter 4 - The room beneath the backyard

Police secured the property.
A dive team arrived after discovering an unusual structure beneath the pool.
Maya was correct.
At the deep end, behind what appeared to be a maintenance panel, there was a submerged access route connecting to a reinforced utility chamber below the backyard.
Not a secret movie lair.
Originally, it had been built decades earlier as a storm-storage room.
Julian had converted it.
The chamber had electricity.
Ventilation.
A locked interior door.
Camera mounts.
And evidence that people had stayed there.
Mattresses.
Food wrappers.
Water bottles.
Zip ties.
No one rushed to declare what every object meant.
But together they painted a disturbing picture.
Elena was not inside.
Neither was another living victim.
What investigators found instead was a wall covered with photographs.
Maya.
Elena.
Me.
Mrs. Harris.
Several strangers.
Some photos were recent.
Others dated back years.
Police photographed everything.
Then they found a laptop.
Encrypted.
And an old answering machine connected to a private line.
One saved message played immediately.
A woman’s voice.
Elena.
“Julian, I found the account. If anything happens to Maya, I’m going to Daniel.”
Date:
Four days earlier.
The day before Maya stopped answering me.
I listened twice.
Then again.
My ex-wife had tried to protect our daughter.
Maybe too late.
Maybe poorly.
But she had tried.
Then officers opened the fourth bag from the pool.
It did not contain a body.
Inside were paper files wrapped in waterproof material.
Financial records.
Property deeds.
Insurance documents.
Some had Elena’s signature.
Others appeared to involve people I didn’t know.
One name appeared repeatedly.
Harris.
Not Helen Harris.
A man named Samuel Harris.
I asked Mrs. Harris.
Her face changed.
“My husband.”
“Your husband died fifteen years ago.”
“That’s what I told everyone.”
I stared.
“What?”
She sat down.
Samuel Harris had not died.
He disappeared.
And the last person Mrs. Harris believed had seen him alive was Julian’s father.
A man named Victor Hale.
I had never heard that name.
Julian’s legal surname was Mercer.
Mrs. Harris explained:
“Mercer was his mother’s name.”
“Who was Victor Hale?”
She looked toward the police activity in Elena’s yard.
“Someone who owned that house before Elena.”
My stomach tightened.
The secret room beneath the pool had existed before Julian moved in.
Maybe before Maya was born.
And Mrs. Harris had known more about the property than she ever told anyone.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown number.
I answered.
Silence.
Then a woman whispered:
“Daniel?”
I recognized the voice immediately.
“Elena?”
She started crying.
“Don’t let them take Maya back to that house.”
“Where are you?”
A pause.
Then:
“I can’t tell you.”
“Julian’s in custody.”
Silence.
Then Elena said something I didn’t understand.
May you like
“No, Daniel.”
“Julian was never the one I was hiding from.”
