Chapter 13 - The raid that never happened

Everyone expected the next step to be dramatic.

Federal agents storming warehouses.

Victor arrested.

Samuel dragged home.

That did not happen.

By the time warrants and coordinated searches were ready, Victor’s known properties were empty.

So was Samuel’s apartment under his false identity.

Someone warned them.

Again.

The investigation had a leak.

That was terrifying.

But instead of abandoning formal channels entirely, Detective Ruiz brought in a tightly controlled federal team with limited distribution.

Evidence was compartmentalized.

Maya entered therapy.

A temporary custody order placed her with me while Elena’s actions and Julian’s abuse were examined through appropriate legal processes.

Elena did not fight it.

“I need to earn being safe again,” she said.

That was the first thing she said I respected in weeks.

Then Mrs. Harris received a package.

No return address.

Inside:

Samuel’s wedding ring.

And a handwritten note.

Helen, I am sorry.

She recognized the handwriting.

“He’s alive.”

Maybe.

Or someone wanted her to believe it.

Then came another package.

This one for me.

Inside:

My father’s old watch.

I had buried it with him.

Or thought I had.

A note:

You found the wrong copy.

No signature.

Maya saw my face.

“What happened?”

“Nothing you need to worry about.”

She stared.

Then:

“Dad.”

I stopped.

I had almost done it.

The exact thing every adult had done to her.

Hide truth “for protection.”

I corrected myself.

“Someone sent me Grandpa’s watch. It means some parts of the investigation aren’t over.”

“Is it dangerous?”

“Possibly.”

“Are you going to leave me?”

“No.”

Immediate.

Certain.

She nodded.

That mattered more than details.

Then Sophie Grant recovered enough to identify another location Victor used.

An abandoned aquatic center outside Charlotte.

Her father had followed him there.

Federal teams searched it.

They found no people.

But they found Grant’s camera.

Blood on the strap.

No body.

Memory card intact.

The final recording showed Grant hiding behind a wall as Victor met someone.

Not Samuel.

Not Julian.

A woman.

Elegant.

Silver hair.

When she turned toward the camera, I recognized her.

May you like

Judge Caroline Mercer.

The family-court judge who had handled my divorce from Elena.
