Chapter 10 - What Elena knew

Elena knew there was a chamber.
She did not know its full use.
At least, that was her claim.
Years earlier, Julian told her it was storm storage.
Then she found a camera there.
A mattress.
Old photographs.
She confronted him.
He said Victor had used the room decades ago and Julian was clearing it out.
She believed him.
Or wanted to.
Then one night, Elena found Samuel Harris inside.
Alive.
That was when everything changed.
Samuel begged her not to tell Mrs. Harris.
“He said Victor would hurt her.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“You saw your neighbor’s dead husband alive and said nothing?”
Elena cried.
“Yes.”
I wanted to hate her.
Part of me did.
But Maya was watching.
I would not turn her mother into a monster just to make my own anger easier.
“What else?”
Elena admitted helping Julian move documents once.
She claimed she didn’t know what they were.
Then she saw my father’s name.
That was when she hired Grant.
Too late.
But not nothing.
Grant discovered the property network.
He suspected Victor and Samuel had been using abandoned homes as document-storage sites and temporary hideouts.
Then Sophie disappeared.
Elena panicked.
She confronted Julian.
He took her phone.
They fought.
She left the house.
The next day, she tried returning for Maya.
Victor was there.
He threatened her.
“He showed me a picture of Maya walking home from school.”
Exactly what he had done to Mrs. Harris years ago.
Patterns repeat because they work.
Elena fled.
She told herself she would get legal help.
Instead, fear paralyzed her for three days.
Three days Maya spent in a cage.
Elena looked at our daughter.
“I failed you.”
Maya’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
Elena collapsed inward.
No instant forgiveness.
Good.
Maya didn’t owe anyone emotional rescue.
Then she said:
“Julian told me you didn’t want me.”
Elena covered her mouth.
“No.”
“He said you left because I ruined everything.”
“No, baby.”
Maya stepped backward.
“Don’t call me baby.”
Elena stopped.
“I’m sorry.”
Maya looked toward me.
“I want to go home with Dad.”
“You will.”
Then she revealed one more thing.
Before Julian locked her outside, she had stolen something from the underground room.
A memory card.
She hid it somewhere he would never search.
“Where?”
Maya looked embarrassed.
“Inside my stuffed bear.”
The bear was still at Elena’s house.
Police retrieved it.
Inside was a microSD card.
The first video showed Victor Hale.
The second showed Samuel Harris.
The third showed something none of us expected.
May you like
My father.
Recorded two years after his supposed death.
