Chapter 12 - The marriage was not the beginning

Elena’s mother, Patricia Wells, had died six years before Elena and I met.

Cancer.

That death was real.

Hospital records confirmed it.

But before becoming a school administrator, Patricia had worked in municipal property records.

Exactly the kind of office Victor’s fraud would intersect.

Elena never knew.

Her mother had helped my father.

Not criminally at first.

She discovered suspicious deed transfers.

Several dead homeowners appeared to authorize sales after death.

Signatures repeated across different documents.

Patricia quietly copied records.

She contacted my father because his company appeared on several renovation permits.

He confessed part of the scheme.

Then they began collecting evidence together.

Why didn’t Patricia report it immediately?

Because one official she approached warned Victor within hours.

Someone inside the system was compromised.

So she stopped trusting normal channels.

My father hid copies.

Patricia kept others.

Their alliance continued even after my father faked his death.

Years later, she became ill.

Before dying, she told Elena only one thing:

“If anyone named Hale ever enters your life, leave.”

Elena remembered it now.

Too late.

Julian’s legal surname was Mercer.

She never connected him.

Did Julian deliberately choose Elena because of Patricia?

That became the question.

When investigators finally confronted him with the photograph, Julian stopped protecting Victor.

“My father told me to meet Elena.”

There it was.

Our marriage.

My divorce.

Maya.

All sitting inside an older conspiracy.

But Julian claimed he genuinely fell in love with Elena.

Maybe.

The relationship could begin as surveillance and become real.

Humans are messy enough for both to coexist.

“Why marry her?”

“Dad wanted to know whether Patricia left anything.”

“And Maya?”

Julian closed his eyes.

“Maya wasn’t part of the plan.”

That mattered.

My daughter had not been born as bait.

She became leverage later.

Then Julian confessed that Victor returned seven months earlier because Grant was getting close.

Victor wanted every remaining copy of the evidence.

He believed my father had left the second ledger to me.

Samuel believed Patricia left another copy to Elena.

Two children of conspirators unknowingly married.

Both potentially holding evidence neither knew existed.

Coincidence?

Not entirely.

Victor had nudged them together through Julian.

That realization made me physically ill.

Then Julian said:

“There’s still someone above my father.”

Detective Ruiz leaned forward.

“Who?”

Julian shook his head.

“I don’t know the name.”

“Then what do you know?”

“My father calls him the Architect.”

I almost laughed.

Too dramatic.

Until Julian explained.

The Architect was not one person who built everything.

It was a title passed among people managing the identity-and-property network.

Victor didn’t create the scheme.

He inherited it.

And according to Julian, the current Architect had ordered Victor to recover every ledger before the end of the month.

May you like

Why?

Because a federal audit was coming.
