Chapter 14 - The judge who knew Julian before we did

Judge Mercer had approved several early custody orders after Elena and I separated.

Nothing obviously improper.

Standard procedure.

But now she appeared in a secret meeting with Victor Hale.

Was she corrupt?

Maybe.

Was there another explanation?

We waited for evidence.

Her records revealed something complicated.

Caroline Mercer was Julian’s aunt.

His mother’s older sister.

That relationship had never been disclosed during our divorce case because Julian was not yet married to Elena when the earliest orders were issued.

Later, when he entered the family, the conflict should have been disclosed.

It wasn’t.

That alone raised serious questions.

Then investigators recovered audio from Grant’s camera.

Caroline:

“You were supposed to disappear permanently.”

Victor:

“I tried.”

“You came back because you lost control of Samuel.”

“No. I came back because Daniel’s son married Patricia’s daughter.”

Caroline laughed bitterly.

“You always did believe in fate.”

Victor:

“I believe in risk.”

Then Caroline said:

“The Architect wants the ledgers before the audit.”

There it was.

She knew the title.

Maybe she was inside the network.

Then Victor asked:

“What about Maya?”

Caroline responded immediately:

“The child is not part of this.”

That surprised me.

Victor:

“She saw Sophie.”

“Then protect her.”

“Julian already handled it.”

Pause.

Caroline:

“What did he do?”

Victor told her.

Even through poor audio, her reaction was clear.

“You put a ten-year-old in a cage?”

Victor:

“Julian did.”

Caroline:

“Get her out. Now.”

She sounded horrified.

Again, people refused convenient categories.

Caroline might have helped bury corruption while still drawing a line at harming a child.

Morality compartmentalized.

Not redemption.

Then Grant shifted position.

A board creaked.

Victor looked toward the camera.

Recording ended.

Was Grant captured?

Unknown.

But federal agents later found Caroline before she could disappear.

She requested counsel.

Then voluntarily provided one name.

The current Architect.

Not Victor.

Not Samuel.

Not my father.

Not Caroline.

A man named Edward Shaw.

I knew him.

Everyone in Charlotte’s development industry knew him.

Philanthropist.

Former state commerce commissioner.

Board member of multiple banks.

And the person who had officiated Elena and Julian’s wedding.

Then Caroline said something that changed the case again.

“Edward didn’t order the cage.”

Nobody had claimed he did.

She continued:

“He ordered Maya protected.”

“Why?”

May you like

Caroline looked directly at me.

“Because Maya is his granddaughter.”
