Eleanor admitted Bennett family had private archive.
Their grandfather founded wealth-management firm.
After his death, holdings divided between Thomas and daughters through trusts.
No magical inheritance.
Independent trustees controlled most assets.
Margaret served compliance attorney before marriage.
She discovered irregular transfers involving charitable medical foundation.
Amount:
roughly $3.4 million over twelve years.
At first she suspected Thomas.
Then realized transfers originated before Thomas had authority.
Older generation.
Their grandfather, Charles Bennett.
Dead twenty-two years.
So not current threat.
Where did money go?
To shelters and private maternal-health clinics.
Mostly legitimate.
One recurring recipient:
Haven House.
A confidential residence for women fleeing domestic or financial coercion.
Margaret volunteered there anonymously.
Could her disappearance be connected to women she helped rather than family money?
Eleanor did not know.
Then Claire found Rachel.
Ethan’s mother.
Rachel Cole.
Thirty-three.
Missing for seven months.
Last employment:
Haven House.
Claire stared.
Ethan had been placed with “Mara” after Rachel vanished.
Margaret apparently still connected to Haven House.
Why?
Investigators found archived volunteer photograph.
Margaret.
Taken six years after funeral.
Alive.
Using name Mara Benton.
So mystery confirmed.
Claire’s mother had survived.
But central questions remained:
Who caused hospital event?
Why fake/maintain death?
Why stay hidden?
What did Eleanor do?
What did Rachel discover?
And why was Margaret now missing again?
Then Ethan revealed Eleanor had visited Mara’s Albany house two months ago.
Eleanor denied.
Ethan insisted:
“She wore white.”
Eleanor often wore white.
Could be another woman.
Security camera from neighbor showed white-suited brunette.
Face partially visible.
Claire recognized Eleanor.
Eleanor finally admitted visit.
“I went because I found address.”
“What happened?”
“Mom wouldn't let me inside.”
“Did you see Ethan?”
“No.”
“What did Mom say?”
“She said Rachel had opened the file.”
There it was.
“What file?”
Eleanor swallowed.
“Bennett File 27.”
Claire had never heard of it.
