Chapter 5 - The Meeting Eleanor Hid

Eleanor saw Margaret eleven years ago at train station in Baltimore.
Alive.
No mistake.
No impersonator.
Her mother.
Margaret approached her.
Asked for ten minutes.
Eleanor followed to nearby diner.
Why had Margaret stayed away?
She said:
“I wasn't supposed to survive.”
Claire stared at Eleanor.
“What did that mean?”
Eleanor said Margaret refused explain fully.
She claimed hospital event was not natural aneurysm.
Someone had administered medication that triggered catastrophic reaction.
She survived.
When she woke, chart already listed her dead.
A hospital employee helped her leave after she realized wrong body had been transferred under her name.
Why not contact daughters?
Margaret believed whoever tampered with medication was connected to Bennett family finances.
She feared daughters were being watched.
Did she know who?
“She suspected Dad.”
Claire went still.
Their father, Thomas Bennett.
He had been alive then.
Margaret and Thomas had separated privately shortly before “death,” though children never knew.
Thomas managed Bennett Family Holdings.
Margaret believed he discovered she had changed trust structure.
Financial motive?
Perhaps.
But Eleanor said Margaret had no proof.
Then why did Eleanor keep meeting secret?
Margaret demanded it.
“She told me Claire was safer believing she was dead.”
“And you obeyed?”
“Yes.”
Claire’s anger sharpened.
“Eleven years.”
“Yes.”
“What happened after?”
Margaret disappeared again.
Eleanor hired investigator secretly.
No result.
Then six years ago she received envelope.
Inside:
Margaret’s hair clip.
Not same one Ethan had.
A duplicate?
No.
Forensic serial matched Margaret original.
Then what was Ethan carrying?
They rechecked.
Ethan’s clip serial also matched?
Impossible.
Closer examination showed Eleanor’s envelope contained photograph of clip, not actual clip. Claire had assumed physical item from Eleanor’s phrasing.
So original remained with Margaret.
Ethan had it now.
Why did Margaret send Eleanor photograph?
Back inscription:
STOP LOOKING OR CLAIRE GETS THE FILE.
What file?
Eleanor had no idea.
Then Thomas Bennett died five years ago in verified car accident.
Claire hoped threat ended.
Margaret still did not return.
That suggested Thomas may not have been person she feared.
Then Ethan remembered something.
Mara watched news story about Thomas’s death.
She cried.
May you like
But said:
“He wasn't the one.”
