Chapter 11 - The Woman in the Car
Hotel traffic cameras captured town car interior better.
Woman in rear seat was not elderly Margaret.
She was younger.
Thirtys.
Rachel Cole.
Alive.
So Ethan had arrived at café carrying Margaret’s clip while his own mother sat in Eleanor’s car.
Why?
Eleanor finally admitted she had been working with Rachel.
Claire stared in disbelief.
“Since when?”
“Six weeks.”
Rachel contacted Eleanor after locating missing Page 6.
She distrusted Margaret.
Why?
Rachel believed Margaret knew more about her adoption than admitted.
Rachel wanted Claire involved.
Margaret refused.
So Rachel went to Eleanor.
Why not simply call Claire?
Because Page 6 contained Claire’s name.
Claire froze.
She had been eighteen when Margaret died, but Rachel’s adoption happened decades earlier.
How could Claire be on page?
Not original page.
An annotation Margaret added seventeen years ago.
What did it say?
Eleanor refused until Rachel present.
Claire laughed bitterly.
“No more staged reveals.”
She called police contact.
Rachel agreed to meet openly.
At attorney’s office, Rachel entered wearing white coat? In café it was Eleanor in white; Rachel was in car. Fine.
Ethan ran to her.
Reunion was emotional but complicated.
“Why did you leave me?”
Rachel cried.
“To find answers.”
“That’s what Mara says too.”
The adults heard indictment.
Rachel gave Claire Page 6.
Original adoption record.
Laura Cole requested temporary placement while fleeing violent partner.
Margaret signed emergency authorization as foundation counsel.
Then permanent adoption supplemental consent bore Laura’s signature.
Forensic comparison suggested forged.
Margin note:
N.V. says do not reopen.
Likely Nathan Vale.
Then Margaret’s later handwriting:
IF RACHEL EVER FINDS THIS, GIVE HER EVERYTHING.
Below:
CLAIRE MAY BE ONLY PERSON WHO CAN PROVE WHO SIGNED.
Claire stared.
“How?”
Attached witness log from permanent adoption hearing.
Clerk:
Susan Bennett.
Claire’s aunt.
Dead now.
But Claire inherited Susan’s papers after death.
Claire had boxes in storage.
Margaret knew that.
Page 6 did not implicate Claire personally.
It pointed to evidence Claire unknowingly possessed.
Eleanor had feared Claire receiving file because it could expose foundation.
That was all.
Then Rachel explained third clip.
Margaret gave her clip to Rachel before disappearing three weeks ago.
“Why?”
“She said if I found Claire first, give it to Ethan.”
“So Mom is missing now?”
Rachel nodded.
“She left to meet someone.”
Who?
“Gregory Vale.”
Eleanor went white.
“My husband?”
“Your estranged husband.”
Why?
Margaret finally learned who forged Laura’s permanent consent.
