Chapter 9 - The Question That No Longer Worked

Ethan refused to choose.

That was the first correct decision.

The voice expected urgency.

Panic.

Binary thinking.

Emma or Mara.

Real or fake.

Save one.

Lose one.

Ethan stepped away from the screen.

“No.”

The timer continued.

04:31.

“Dad!”

Lily cried.

“I’m not choosing based on their game.”

He looked at Eleanor.

“Trace it.”

They worked.

Both video feeds were local.

Somewhere on the property.

Ethan watched backgrounds instead of faces.

Left room: faint mechanical vibration.

Right room: condensation on a pipe.

He knew the mansion.

Generator room beneath east wing.

Old utility tunnel beneath greenhouse.

Two locations.

Ethan split security.

He went left.

Eleanor right.

Lily remained with officers.

The timer hit 01:12.

Ethan broke into the generator room.

Empty chair.

Monitor.

Pre-recorded video.

No Emma.

Eleanor reached the greenhouse tunnel.

Same.

Both feeds fake.

The timer reached zero.

Nothing happened.

Then the distorted voice laughed.

“Improvement.”

Not a rescue test.

A decision test.

They were being studied.

Again.

Ethan smashed the monitor.

Upstairs, Lily had disappeared.

Panic.

Then they found her in Emma’s study.

She was not kidnapped.

She was searching.

“What are you doing?”

“Mommy said when the question stops working, find the answer she never told me.”

“What answer?”

“The kite.”

Lily opened Emma’s locked desk.

Inside was the yellow kite.

Folded.

Ethan stared.

On the wooden crossbar were dates.

Messages.

Emma had used the kite as a hidden record.

One sentence:

MARA KNOWS THE KITE STORY BECAUSE I TOLD HER.

So Mara’s knowledge was not evidence of betrayal.

Emma intentionally compromised the test.

Why?

Next line:

ANY TEST WE KNOW CAN BE STOLEN.

ONLY UNPLANNED KINDNESS CANNOT BE REHEARSED.

Ethan remembered the freezer.

Mara’s first reaction after being freed.

Get Lily out.

Not save me.

Not arrest Eleanor.

Protect Lily.

Was that Mara’s instinct?

Or Emma’s?

Another note:

MARA IS NOT MY ENEMY.

IF SHE PRETENDS TO BETRAY ME, LET HER.

Then:

ELEANOR DOESN’T KNOW ABOUT LEVEL THREE.

Ethan looked at Eleanor.

“What is Level Three?”

She genuinely did not know.

They searched Charles Vale’s research.

Level One: recognition.

Level Two: behavior prediction.

Level Three:

RELATIONAL SUBSTITUTION.

The objective was horrifyingly simple.

Could a replacement person gradually occupy the emotional role of someone else?

Not merely look like Emma.

Become Emma in the family’s behavior.

Could Ethan eventually turn to Mara for comfort?

Could Lily accept her?

Could Eleanor treat her as the same adversary?

The freezer was part of Level Three.

Mara had to suffer as Emma.

Be rescued as Emma.

Receive Ethan’s protection as Emma.

The experiment measured whether emotional bonds transferred with identity cues.

Ethan felt violated.

Mara had been placed in genuine danger to test whether he would love a face.

But someone had overlooked Lily.

She recognized Mara.

Then deliberately called her Mommy anyway.

Ethan turned.

“Why?”

Lily looked down.

“Because she was scared.”

“You knew it wasn’t Emma?”

“Yes.”

“From the moment we opened the freezer?”

Lily nodded.

Everything changed.

Lily had known.

She played along.

Not because she was fooled.

Because Mara needed Ethan to rescue her.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Mommy said if Mara ever had to be her, I had to help.”

Ethan closed his eyes.

Again, Emma had put too much responsibility on a child.

But Lily’s choice revealed something the experiment could not measure.

She had called Mara Mommy not because identity transferred.

Because compassion did.

She knew Mara was not her mother.

She saved her anyway.

Then Lily handed Ethan something hidden inside the kite.

A photograph.

Emma beside Charles Vale.

Dated four years after Charles supposedly died.

On the back:

LEVEL THREE DID NOT END WITH MARA.

ETHAN HAS ALREADY LIVED WITH A SUBSTITUTE.

Ethan stared.

“For whom?”

Lily looked frightened.

May you like

The answer was written underneath.

ELEANOR.
