Chapter 1 - Emma Opened Her Eyes

The hammer hit the concrete with a metallic crash.

Ethan did not hear it.

For several seconds, he heard nothing except the mechanical hum of the freezer.

Emma.

His wife.

The woman he had been told was gone.

She sat against the frost-covered wall with her hands restrained, her body shaking so violently that the chair beneath her trembled.

“Mommy!”

Lily tried to run inside.

Ethan caught her.

“No.”

He pushed her gently behind him and entered.

The cold struck instantly.

Emma’s eyes followed him.

Disbelief.

Then recognition.

Then panic.

Not relief.

That bothered him.

Ethan tore the covering from her mouth.

Emma sucked in air.

“Ethan…”

“I’ve got you.”

Her frozen fingers caught his sleeve.

“Lily?”

“She’s here.”

“No.”

Emma’s grip suddenly tightened.

“Get her out.”

Ethan stared.

“What?”

“Get Lily out of this house.”

Outside the freezer, Eleanor backed away.

Lily saw her.

“You knew!”

Eleanor shook her head.

“I didn’t.”

“You knew!”

“I knew the freezer was locked. I didn’t know Emma was—”

Ethan turned.

“Don’t move.”

Something in his voice stopped Eleanor instantly.

He freed Emma and lifted her.

Her head fell against his shoulder.

She was frighteningly cold.

Yet as Ethan carried her into the corridor, Emma saw Eleanor.

Her entire body stiffened.

Eleanor stared back.

Neither woman looked surprised to see the other.

That was the first thing Ethan noticed.

The second was stranger.

Emma whispered:

“You weren’t supposed to be here.”

Eleanor’s face changed.

Neither was surprised.

They were afraid.

Of each other.

“Dad?”

Lily stood beside the broken padlock.

Ethan looked at his daughter.

“How did you know?”

Lily’s face crumpled.

“Mommy told me.”

Emma lifted her head.

“No, I didn’t.”

Lily stared at her.

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Last night.”

Emma went completely still.

“That’s impossible.”

Lily began crying harder.

“You called me.”

Ethan looked between them.

Emma had supposedly been missing for six days.

Eleanor had told him Emma left voluntarily after their marriage began collapsing.

Ethan had spent those six days searching.

Then that morning Eleanor claimed Emma had sent legal documents saying she wanted no contact.

Now Emma was here.

But she was denying calling her own daughter.

Ethan took Emma upstairs.

He wrapped her in blankets and called emergency services.

Eleanor remained in the drawing room under the watch of two security employees.

Lily refused to leave Emma.

While they waited, Ethan crouched beside her.

“Tell me exactly what happened last night.”

Lily wiped her face.

“My phone rang.”

“What time?”

“After midnight.”

“Did you see the number?”

“No.”

“What did Mommy say?”

Lily closed her eyes.

“She said, ‘Bluebird, listen carefully. Basement. Last door. Bring the iron hammer.’”

Emma stared.

Bluebird.

Ethan saw it.

“Emma?”

She looked frightened.

“That was my name for Lily when she was a baby.”

“Who else knew it?”

“No one.”

Lily continued.

“She told me not to tell Eleanor.”

Eleanor heard from the doorway.

Her face hardened.

“That’s convenient.”

Ethan turned.

“I told you not to move.”

“I didn’t know Emma was downstairs.”

Emma suddenly shouted:

“Stop lying!”

Lily jumped.

Emma immediately softened.

“I’m sorry, sweetheart.”

But Ethan was watching Eleanor.

“You knew something was behind that door.”

Eleanor said nothing.

“Why?”

Her eyes moved toward Emma.

Then toward Lily.

“I was told never to open it.”

“By whom?”

Eleanor hesitated.

Emma whispered:

“Don’t.”

Ethan looked at his wife.

“Why are you protecting her?”

“I’m not.”

“Then what aren’t you telling me?”

Paramedic sirens sounded outside.

Emma closed her eyes.

Before anyone could continue, Lily noticed something protruding from Emma’s cream blouse.

A thin silver chain.

“Mommy.”

Emma looked down.

Hanging from the chain was a tiny brass key.

Eleanor saw it.

Color drained from her face.

Ethan noticed.

“What does that open?”

Emma covered the key with her hand.

“Nothing.”

Eleanor whispered:

“That’s not possible.”

Emma stared at her.

Ethan’s patience vanished.

“What does it open?”

Neither woman answered.

Then Lily said quietly:

“I know.”

Everyone turned.

Lily pointed toward the basement.

“There’s another door inside the freezer.”

Emma’s eyes filled with terror.

And for the first time since Ethan found her, she begged him not to save her.

“Ethan, whatever Lily tells you next…”

May you like

Her voice shook.

“…don’t believe her.”
