Chapter 8 - Two Women Called Mommy

Lily had known about Mara.
Not from the beginning.
Three months earlier she caught Mara pretending to be Emma.
Mara immediately confessed.
She expected Lily to tell Ethan.
Emma stopped her.
Instead, Emma turned it into a game.
“Find Mommy.”
Emma and Mara would change clothing.
Hair.
Perfume.
Voice.
Lily had to identify the real Emma.
Ethan was horrified.
“You made our daughter part of this?”
The underground recording of Emma answered indirectly.
“I know involving Lily was wrong.”
At least Emma understood.
“I told myself I was teaching her to stay safe. Maybe I was teaching her to be afraid.”
Lily had become exceptionally good.
Hands.
Breathing.
The way Emma tilted her head.
Which finger she used to tuck hair behind Lily’s ear.
The scar.
Mara could imitate appearance.
Not history.
Then the calls began.
Someone using Emma’s voice instructed Lily to ignore those details.
Trust the voice.
Trust the face.
Trust authority.
Emma realized Lily was being targeted.
That was when she created one final rule:
If two women both look like Mommy, do not choose either until one tells you what happened to the yellow kite.
Only Emma and Lily knew.
Ethan did not.
“What happened?”
Lily looked embarrassed.
“I peed my pants.”
Despite everything, Ethan almost laughed.
A year earlier, their yellow kite became stuck in a tree.
Lily climbed after it.
Got frightened.
Emma climbed up.
They both became stuck.
Lily wet herself laughing and crying.
Emma promised never to tell Ethan.
A ridiculous private memory.
Perfect authentication.
Then Lily revealed what happened two nights before Emma disappeared.
She saw Eleanor talking to “Mommy” downstairs.
Lily used the yellow-kite test.
The woman failed.
Mara.
But Mara whispered:
“Don’t tell Eleanor you know.”
Why?
“Because we don’t know if Eleanor changed sides.”
Then the real Emma appeared from the service corridor.
Three women.
Emma.
Mara.
Eleanor.
They argued.
Lily heard one sentence:
“The freezer is tomorrow.”
Emma said it.
So Emma knew the freezer event was coming.
That changed everything again.
Had she planned it?
Ethan searched recordings.
Finally he found Emma’s operational notes.
The freezer was supposed to be a controlled sting.
Mara would enter.
Eleanor would pretend to restrain her.
The suspected watcher would be fed information that Emma was trapped.
They hoped the person would reveal themselves.
But Emma canceled the plan after discovering Lily’s bedroom audio device.
Someone reactivated it anyway.
That explained why Mara ended up inside.
The plan was real.
The danger was not supposed to be.
Just as Eleanor’s involvement could be real without making her responsible for the final act.
Ethan asked Lily:
“Who changed sides?”
“I don’t know.”
“But the note says you do.”
“Mommy thought I would.”
“Why?”
“Because someone gave me the wrong answer about the kite.”
“Who?”
Lily looked at Eleanor.
Eleanor stiffened.
“Me?”
Lily shook her head.
“Mara.”
That made sense.
Mara did not know.
Then Lily continued:
“But later Mara knew.”
Ethan stared.
“How?”
“Someone told her.”
Only Emma or Lily could have.
Lily did not.
Therefore Emma told Mara.
Unless someone had been listening when Emma and Lily created the test.
The private memory was no longer private.
Their strongest authentication had been compromised.
Ethan suddenly understood the purpose of the repeated impersonations.
Not merely to fool them.
To learn their verification methods.
Every time the family created a new way to distinguish truth from imitation, someone observed and copied it.
The experiment was teaching itself how to defeat them.
Eleanor whispered:
“My father called that convergence.”
“What happens at convergence?”
“You stop being able to prove who is real.”
A monitor activated by itself.
Two live feeds appeared.
Left:
Emma.
Restrained in a room.
Scar on left hand.
Right:
Mara.
Restrained in another room.
Scar on right.
A distorted voice said:
“Tomorrow’s reunion has been moved forward.”
Ethan stood.
“Where are they?”
The voice ignored him.
“Choose one.”
A timer appeared.
05:00.
Lily grabbed Ethan’s hand.
Then both women looked into their cameras.

At exactly the same moment, they said:
“Ask me about the yellow kite.”
