Chapter 6 - Emma’s First Lie

Emma had known Mara for eleven months.
That revelation hurt Ethan almost as much as discovering the freezer.
Mara was not a random impersonator.
Emma hired her.
Not to replace her.
To test the mansion.
After finding Charles Vale’s MIRROR research, Emma became convinced someone was reproducing his experiments.
She wanted to know whether the household could distinguish her from a carefully prepared substitute.
Ethan stared at the recording.
“You tested us?”
Emma could not hear him.
But her recorded expression almost seemed ashamed.
“Mara agreed to enter the house twice while I was away.”
Ethan remembered.
A night three months earlier when Emma came home late.
She had seemed strange.
Didn’t kiss him.
Went directly upstairs.
He assumed anger.
Had that been Mara?
Another afternoon, Lily said Mommy smelled different.
Ethan laughed.
A child’s observation.
Not anymore.
Emma continued:
“The first test lasted four minutes. Ethan did not notice.”
He felt humiliated.
“The second lasted eleven. Lily noticed in ninety seconds.”
Lily looked at him.
“How?”
Ethan asked.
Lily whispered:
“Mommy ties my hair tighter.”
A tiny detail.
More reliable than a face.
Emma stopped the experiments after that.
But someone else learned about Mara.
Someone began contacting her.
Paying her.
Then threatening her.
Mara came to Emma frightened.
She believed Charles Vale’s old research group still existed.
Emma told Eleanor.
Together they began investigating.
So Emma and Eleanor really had been allies.
Secretly.
Why hide it from Ethan?
Emma answered in the recording.
“Because someone was using Ethan’s voice.”
The audio devices.
Emma did not know whether Ethan was compromised, manipulated or innocent.
She chose secrecy.
A choice made from fear.
A choice that damaged trust.
Not villainy.
Not innocence.
Human failure.
Then the recording reached the disappearance.
Six days earlier, Emma entered the freezer voluntarily to meet Mara.
Mara had received instructions to replace Emma for one night.
They planned to turn the trap around.
Emma would hide below.
Mara would follow the impersonator’s instructions.
Eleanor would monitor.
Then someone changed the plan.
Emma’s recording ended abruptly.
A second file appeared.
Mara.
She looked terrified.
“They know.”
“Who?”
No answer.
“They know Emma and I switched.”
The footage shook.
Mara whispered:
“They told me if I don’t stay in the freezer, they’ll put Lily there instead.”
Ethan closed his eyes.
Mara had allowed herself to be restrained.
Not because she wanted to impersonate Emma.
Because someone threatened Lily.
Then another voice spoke off-camera.
Female.
“Good girl.”
Eleanor stiffened.
The voice sounded exactly like her.
But they already knew voices could be copied.
Ethan refused the obvious conclusion.
The recording continued.
The unseen woman asked Mara:
“Where is Emma?”
Mara answered:
“I don’t know.”
A slap sounded off-camera.
Mara flinched.
Still:
“I don’t know.”
She had protected Emma.
Then the screen went black.
Lily whispered:
“Mara saved Mommy.”
Maybe.
But Emma remained missing.
Ethan searched the underground room.
A calendar hung on the wall.
Six dates circled.
Each corresponded to a family argument Ethan remembered.
A fight with Emma.
A custody disagreement involving Eleanor.
A night Lily locked herself in her bedroom.
The household’s worst moments had been cataloged.
Not random.
Provoked?
At the bottom was one final date.
Tomorrow.
Label:
FAMILY REUNIFICATION EVENT.
Ethan stared.
“What happens tomorrow?”
Eleanor knew.
Her father used that phrase.
It meant the final stage of a behavioral study.
Bring all subjects together.
Show them contradictory evidence.
Observe whom they trust.
Ethan looked at the freezer.
Emma.
Mara.
Eleanor.
Lily.
Him.
Someone was preparing a final test.
Then Lily found another name beneath the schedule.
One Ethan did not recognize.
SUBJECT 06 — SOPHIE MERCER.
Ethan stared.
May you like
“There is no Sophie Mercer.”
Eleanor’s face said otherwise.
