Chapter 9 - Eleanor’s Choice
Eleanor admitted she knew about both bouquets.
She had arranged Halcyon tradition.
One bouquet was Ethan’s apology to Rachel.
One was foundation gift to Melissa.
After Rachel left office, Eleanor arrived looking for her.
She found both bouquets there.
Why was Melissa’s bouquet at foundation instead of Halcyon?
Margaret Bell had brought it for Henry to sign card.
Then Rachel suddenly needed transport Melissa.
In confusion, Eleanor placed one bouquet in Rachel’s car.
Henry later took remaining bouquet to Halcyon.
Which was which?
“I don’t know.”
But Rachel believed someone intentionally switched them.
Why would bouquet matter to identity?
Because hidden micro-capsule.
Rachel had placed financial evidence inside one rose.
If she later picked wrong bouquet, evidence could end up in car with Melissa.
Maybe person searching for evidence followed wrong woman.
That could explain crash.
Was crash deliberate?
Original investigation called loss of control on wet road.
New mechanical review of archived evidence showed brake line had been damaged.
Could be impact.
Could predate crash.
Not enough proof.
Then dental record substitution.
Who submitted Rachel’s file?
Hospital identification consultant:
Dr. Martin Cole.
Former Halcyon medical contractor.
He died two years later.
His archived statement said Eleanor Carter supplied dental file.
Ethan turned.
Eleanor looked horrified.
“I supplied Rachel’s records because police asked.”
“Did you identify body?”
“No.”
“Did you know Melissa was driving Rachel’s car?”
“Not then.”
“When did you learn?”
“Three days later.”
“Why didn’t you correct identification?”
Eleanor began crying.
“Because Rachel called me.”
Rachel was alive.
She told Eleanor not to correct record yet.
She believed whoever tampered with car would stop hunting her if they believed she died.
Eleanor agreed to temporary silence.
Temporary became years.
Then Rachel discovered Melissa had been deliberately misidentified before she ever called Eleanor.
Someone else had initiated false death.
Eleanor merely failed to correct it.
Who?
Martin Cole could have.
But why?
Then Claire found mother Margaret’s journal.
Entry dated day after crash:
MARTIN DID WHAT HENRY ASKED. GOD HELP US.
Ethan stared.
His father.
Henry may have ordered misidentification.
Why?
Eleanor defended late husband.
“He was protecting Rachel.”
“How?”
“If Adrian Grant believed Rachel survived, he would hunt her for evidence.”
“So Dad made Rachel legally dead?”
“I think so.”
“You think?”
“Henry never admitted it.”
Then Margaret’s next line:
HENRY DOESN’T KNOW MARTIN SWITCHED THE WRONG FILE.
Wrong file?
Maybe Henry intended temporary anonymous identification, not Rachel specifically.
Someone altered plan.
Then final line:
THE SECOND BOUQUET IS STILL IN COLD STORAGE.
Eight years later, what could that mean?
Flowers could not survive.
Unless “bouquet” was code.
Claire recognized mother’s accounting shorthand.
In Margaret’s ledgers, RED ROSE referred to a restricted evidence packet.
Two bouquets meant two evidence sets.
One had disappeared.
The other remained in cold storage.
