Chapter 7 - The Missing Rose

Eight years earlier Rachel had hidden a micro-storage capsule inside one rose stem.

She feared electronic files could be deleted.

The capsule contained photographs of financial ledgers.

She planned give it to federal investigator.

Ethan’s bouquet happened to provide perfect hiding place.

That was why Rachel refused flowers publicly but secretly used one.

Someone learned.

After Rachel left foundation, Henry found bouquet.

He carried it to Halcyon trying locate her.

One rose already missing.

Was that the one with capsule?

Yes.

Rachel had taken it.

Then why twenty-three roses mattered?

Because Henry assumed she had removed one casually.

He never knew capsule existed.

So current bouquet with artificial twenty-fourth rose and H-14 key was Rachel’s deliberate signal.

Someone following old story would recognize it.

Who arranged alteration?

Florist woman.

Facial analysis and Rebecca’s identification produced name:

Rachel Carter.

Older.

Different hairstyle.

But likely her.

Rachel had been in town three days earlier.

Ethan’s knees nearly gave way.

She had stood ten minutes from home and not contacted him.

Why?

Maybe she feared him.

Maybe someone else.

Then financial ledger photos were recovered from H-14 archive.

They showed Carter Foundation payments to Grant Logistics, company linked to Melissa’s husband Adrian.

At first looked like corruption.

Further accounting showed payments were legitimate transportation contracts before foundation learned Adrian was abusive.

Rachel discovered one payment after Melissa entered Halcyon and assumed leak.

She suspected Adrian used contract access to locate wife.

But who gave him information?

Not Ethan.

Not Henry.

Not Eleanor.

Audit logs showed confidential address opened by Margaret Bell, finance director.

Margaret later claimed routine reimbursement.

Could she have leaked?

She died before questioned.

Then Rebecca revealed Margaret had a daughter.

Claire.

Silence.

Ethan turned toward wife.

Claire’s face drained.

“My mother worked for Carter Foundation,” she admitted.

“You never told me she was Margaret Bell.”

“My legal surname was my father’s.”

“You knew Rachel investigated your mother?”

“Not when we married.”

“When did you learn?”

“Six months ago.”

That explained Claire’s secret investigation.

She discovered mother might be connected to Rachel’s disappearance.

She feared telling Ethan before knowing truth.

Was Claire protecting Margaret?

Maybe.

Then Eleanor accused her:

“You married Ethan knowing who he was.”

“No.”

Claire insisted she met Ethan years later by coincidence.

Records supported.

But Rachel’s anonymous contact four months earlier meant Rachel knew exactly who Claire was.

Why contact daughter of woman she once suspected?

Because Rachel had discovered Margaret was not leak.

Someone used her credentials.

Who?

Still unknown.

Then Ethan asked Claire:

“Why did Sophie know Rebecca needed saving?”

Claire hesitated.

“She heard us yesterday.”

“Talking about Rebecca?”

“No.”

“About who?”

Claire looked toward Sophie.

“Sophie heard me speaking to Rachel.”

Ethan froze.

“You spoke to Rachel?”

“Yesterday morning.”

“What did she say?”

Claire answered:

“She said she was coming home.”

But Rachel never arrived.

May you like

Rebecca did.

And somebody had been waiting.
