Chapter 7 - Rachel’s Brother

Rachel had one older brother.
Jonathan Hale.
Not a secret relative; Ethan knew Uncle Jonathan when younger.
Jonathan served as trustee of Rachel’s personal fortune.
After her death, relations with David collapsed.
He accused David of isolating Rachel.
David accused Jonathan of interfering in Ethan’s inheritance.
Then Jonathan moved overseas.
He returned secretly week of Ethan’s disappearance.
Why?
He received same anonymous warning.
RACHEL WAS RIGHT.
HE’S NEXT.
Two men were manipulated.
David ordered White Ribbon extraction.
Jonathan believed David was threat.
Jonathan entered estate disguised through staff route intending remove Ethan first.
Was he Rachel impersonator?
No.
Male.
But he hired private investigator, Rebecca Sloan.
Woman matching Anna’s height.
She had access to Rachel’s old coat, locket and perfume through Jonathan.
There.
Rebecca impersonated Rachel.
Then maid.
She removed Ethan from nursery.
Why?
Jonathan believed Ethan needed protection from David.
So two rescue operations collided.
Rebecca handed Ethan to Anna, assuming Anna part Jonathan plan?
Actually no—she saw White Ribbon and realized Eleanor’s protocol activated. She chose to let Anna take him rather than risk confrontation.
Then who diverted Anna to abandoned cottage?
Anna received new instruction after leaving estate.
Voice said safe house compromised.
Go to caretaker cottage.
She obeyed.
At cottage, another vehicle was supposed to arrive.
It never did.
Anna waited twenty minutes.
Then saw car approaching.
She panicked because driver was Marcus.
Why fear Marcus?
Earlier Eleanor had warned White Ribbon staff:
“If Marcus ever appears without secondary verifier, do not surrender child.”
Anna drove away with Ethan.
Marcus followed.
During pursuit—not dangerous high speed, but tense—Anna’s car developed engine trouble.
She stopped near service station.
A second masked person approached.
Anna fled on foot to seek help?
Need logic.
Better: Anna placed Ethan in cottage briefly while checking outside, then was forcibly removed? Avoid violence. She was lured away by fake police call; when returned, Ethan gone? But Ethan found in cottage. She leaves to get help after phone dies, police later find him. Fine.
Anna left Ethan in locked caretaker cottage for approximately twenty minutes while she ran to nearby farmhouse after her car failed and phone lost signal.
When she returned, police were already there.
Marcus stood outside.
He told her:
“If you walk in now, David will say you abducted him.”
Then offered money to disappear.
So Marcus was man.
Anna finally recognized raven buckle? Wait Marcus has falcon, not raven. Man she thought David had raven? Need maintain.
She now says Marcus wore ordinary security shoes. The nursery man with raven buckle was Jonathan, perhaps. But Jonathan says he never entered nursery. Rebecca did. So male voice behind door maybe Jonathan was directing Rebecca. Yes.
Ethan’s memory of man behind door likely Jonathan.
Then why David’s voice? Separate memory layers blended.
The mystery had multiple overlapping “orders.”
Who gave THE order Anna references in courtroom? Could be deeper. Need preserve until Ch15.
Anna said:
“None of those men gave the order I meant.”
David stared.
“Then what were you telling Ethan to remember?”
Anna looked toward white ribbon.
“The woman who invented White Ribbon knew someone would eventually use it against him.”
“Eleanor?”
“Yes.”
“And before she died, she gave me one final instruction.”
Anna reached beneath her cap.
Inside ribbon seam was tiny stitched number.
Ethan’s ribbon had same.
May you like
But numbers differed by one digit.
Together they formed a bank-deposit reference.
