Investigators stopped asking who wanted Ethan physically harmed.
They asked who needed scandal.
If Ethan vanished:
David looked negligent or guilty.
Jonathan looked like inheritance-hungry uncle.
Anna looked like kidnapper.
Marcus looked compromised.
White Ribbon Foundation looked criminal.
Nearly every guardian around Ethan could be discredited simultaneously.
Who benefited if all failed?
Rachel’s trust had last-resort institutional trustee.
Sterling North Fiduciary.
A company.
Not individual.
Sterling North would temporarily control Ethan’s 18%.
And Sterling North had financial relationship with merger buyer.
There.
Institutional conflict.
Sterling North earned $46 million advisory fee if merger closed.
Now conspiracy became larger but clearer.
Who at Sterling North knew White Ribbon?
Senior partner:
Peter Wynn.
Margaret’s husband.
Margaret went pale.
They had separated quietly before Ethan disappeared.
She never disclosed because embarrassment.
Peter had access to documents through her home office.
Could know custodian protocols.
Could draft fake messages.
Could access voice files through corporate due diligence.
Could impersonate David.
Could know Rachel’s trust.
Then bank records.
Peter received $3.1 million contingent bonus if merger completed.
Motive.
But merger never completed because Ethan was recovered and David refused vote.
Peter gained nothing.
Could still have tried.
Where was he night?
At gala.
Photographs showed him.
Shoes?
Black with small silver raven buckle—the logo of Sterling North’s private members club.
Ethan saw bird buckle.
Not Hale raven.
Memory misinterpreted.
Peter was man behind nursery door.

He denied.
Audio enhancement from gala recovered partial:
“...take him before midnight...”
Context later:
“If threat is real, they should take him before midnight.”
Again phrase.
But who was he speaking to?
Charles Vane.
Peter knew protection plan was forming.
Did he manipulate it?
Then Anna identified something more important.
The diversion caller used phrase:
“White ribbon has turned gray.”
Emergency override code.
Only C custodian should know.
Margaret knew.
Peter could steal.
Grace knew.
Eleanor knew but dead.
Then Margaret admitted writing code on paper once.
Kept in locked desk.
Peter had access.
Possible.
Investigators searched Peter’s archived files.
Found scanned image of code sheet.
Damning.
Then also found email:
PETER — DO NOT USE THIS UNLESS DAVID LOSES CONTROL.
Sender:
Eleanor Cole.
Why would Eleanor give him override?
Because Peter had been backup custodian before conflict emerged.
Eleanor trusted him once.
Later removed him after discovering Sterling North conflict.
Did Peter know he was removed?
Yes.
He objected.
Now motive stronger.
Then Ethan remembered woman with green ring.
Margaret had knelt before him.
She was genuine custodian.
But after she left, another person came in.
A man.
Silver bird buckle.
Peter.
He whispered:
“Your daddy wants you to go with Anna.”
Ethan asked:
“Where?”
