Chapter 9 - The Suggestion Claire Forgot
Claire exploded.
“I never suggested Rachel was dead.”
Peter produced audio.
A call from seven weeks earlier.
Claire sounded exhausted.
Rachel had been asking for Ethan daily.
St. Matthew was questioning restrictions.
Claire said:
“If Ethan thought this was over—if he thought there was nothing left to fight for—maybe he’d stop calling.”
Peter responded:
“You mean tell him she transferred?”
Claire:
“I mean make him stop looking.”
She never explicitly said “dead.”
Peter claimed he interpreted.
The next day, he sent draft foreign-clinic notice.
Claire stared at audio transcript.
“I didn’t ask him to kill her on paper.”
“No,” Maya said. “But when he did, what did you do?”
Claire whispered:
“I used it.”
There it was.
Peter created false death narrative.
Claire delivered it.
Daniel failed to stop isolation and benefited from Rachel’s absence.
Marcus breached records and fueled suspicion.
But each role distinct.
Why did Peter escalate?
Not merely to help Claire.
He had financial motive.
Daniel’s risk assessment contract paid $25,000.
Peter discovered Carter Foundation restructuring could lead to lucrative cybersecurity contract for Northfield/associated vendors if merger approved.
He also believed if Rachel returned and voted no, project died.
Peter wanted merger.
Did Daniel know?
Daniel denied.
Emails showed Peter oversold his mandate.
He told Claire he had Daniel’s full authority when he did not.
He used old Samuel Bennett email alias to appear connected to trusted family network.
He created fake Dr. Samuel Reed credentials.
He forged Rachel’s restriction documents using signature from old medical forms.
He manipulated Claire.
But Claire independently continued after realizing irregularities.
Then what about $48,000?
Peter routed Westbridge expense money through Northfield Patient Advocacy LLC.
Some paid Rachel’s legitimate bills.
Some reimbursed Claire.
Some Peter retained.
No bribe explicitly labeled.
Claire wasn’t knowingly paid to imprison Rachel.
But she accepted opaque payments while controlling access.
Ethically and legally serious.
Yet Peter still did not explain why Rachel was behind wooden door in Ethan’s own home.
Claire did.
She had intended finally end lie that night.
She removed Rachel from St. Matthew because center was about to notify authorities.
Rachel insisted on seeing children first.
Claire agreed.
Then Claire arrived and saw Ethan hosting foundation donors at dinner.
Among guests:
Daniel Mercer.
Marcus Bennett.
And one more person.
Peter Lang.
Claire realized if Rachel walked into party alive, all three men would see operation collapsing.
She panicked and locked Rachel temporarily in side room.
Then children found papers.
Thus entire 15-second scene was collision point of months of secrecy.
Ethan asked:
“Why was Peter invited?”
He hadn’t invited him.
Guest list addition came from Daniel’s office.
Daniel looked shocked.
“My office didn’t add him.”
Event coordinator produced email.
From Daniel’s address.
Sent that morning.
Peter had been positioning himself inside house for final step.
What final step?
Police searched his coat.
Found flash drive.
