Marcus arrived with attorneys.
He denied reading Rachel’s medical record.
His company processed millions of records.
Direct access restricted.
Audit logs, however, showed executive override.
Rachel Carter’s discharge file had been viewed by account:
MBENNETT-ADMIN.
Marcus claimed account compromised.
Possible.
But access occurred from his home IP.
Then again from Claire’s home Wi-Fi.
Claire looked stunned.
Marcus had stayed at her house after Rachel’s accident.
Why?
Family dinner.
Nothing unusual.
Did he use her computer?
“Yes.”
What did he search?
Marcus eventually admitted.
Rachel’s record.
Why?
Claire told him Ethan might be controlling Rachel.
Marcus wanted see whether medical notes mentioned abuse.
They did not.
Instead they showed memory impairment and one marital argument.
Marcus nevertheless shared record details with Daniel Mercer.
Why?
Daniel had called asking whether Rachel was competent for upcoming foundation vote.
Marcus knew he should refuse.
He shared anyway.
That allowed Daniel to understand Rachel’s vulnerability.
But Marcus denied creating fake Samuel identity.
Digital forensics found something else.
The “Samuel Reed” emails were sent through anonymized service.
Yet one recovery address linked to:
sam.reed47@...
Registered years ago to Samuel Bennett.
Claire’s father.
Samuel Bennett died six years earlier.
Another “dead man”? Avoid resurrection. Someone used his old family email alias.
Who still had access?
Marcus and Claire inherited family domain administration.
Marcus said he never used it.
Claire barely remembered password.
Then investigators found login from Carter Foundation office.
Daniel Mercer had once been given administrator access while helping settle Samuel Bennett’s estate because Samuel was foundation donor.
So Daniel could access old alias.
Was Samuel Reed simply Daniel hiding behind dead donor’s first name?
Voice comparison.
Claire had spoken to fake doctor several times.
Recorded calls compared with Daniel’s voice.
Not match.
Fake Samuel was another man.
Who?
Audio analyst removed mild filtering.
Marcus listened.
His expression changed.
“I know him.”
Ethan leaned forward.
“Who?”
“Peter Lang.”
Peter was former Northfield systems engineer fired by Marcus two years earlier for unauthorized access to patient records.
Peter later became private investigator.
Daniel Mercer had hired him for foundation due diligence.
Now pieces aligned:
Daniel wanted information about Rachel’s capacity.
Marcus improperly shared record access.
Peter had technical access and investigative tools.
Claire had emotional bias against Ethan.
Rachel was impaired.
Together, whether coordinated or not, conditions existed for isolation.
Police found Peter.
He did not flee.
He admitted being “Samuel Reed.”
But he insisted:
“I was hired to verify Rachel’s capacity, not fake her death.”
“Who hired you?”
Peter looked at Daniel.
“Westbridge.”
Daniel denied instructing deception.
Peter then produced contract.

Signed:
Daniel Mercer.
That was real.
But handwritten addendum:
MAINTAIN SEPARATION THROUGH BOARD DATE.
Initials:
D.M.
Daniel said forged.
Forensic examination would decide.
Then Peter said:
“The death idea wasn’t Daniel’s.”

“Whose was it?”
